Screwed up - July 3rd 2015, 06:28 PM

I really worked hard and studied for the exam, and I did super badly for the chemistry paper. I misread one of the questions, and got the whole question wrong, which was worth around ten marks..... Even though it's not the final exam, but it's a very important exam because we're going to get banded based on the results. If I get good results I'll go into a good band and vice versa....

That's why I tell myself I really need to get good grades. I want to be in a good band. Maybe that's because I don't want to be looked down upon. I want to be a capable person....but now I can't accept the fact that I flunked an exam just because of my carelessness. I really don't want to go into a lousy band I don't want people to think that I'm dumb or whatsoever... WHY CANT I DO WELL?????

My friends are comparing results with me and I kinda feel pressurized. I was always the one who had better grades than them... But it seems like now I'm the one who gets the lousiest grades!?? My exams are not over yet but I really really don't feel like studying...... I really really cannot accept if I get into a lousy band ((

Hey there,

Have you had the results for the exam yet? I understand the pressure to do well and get into a good band, but it can also increase your anxiety when you compare answers with friends.

Try not to let this experience knock you down and discourage you from studying. Try to learn from it instead- for example, before answering questions, double check the question and underline any key words. Then when you answer the question, read your answer back and ask yourself 'Does this answer the question?'

You obviously worked hard, and I'm sure that you are a more than capable person. If you don't end up in the band that you want to be, no-one is going to think you are dumb. If the mistake does affect your banding, and you are placed in a lower band, chances are when you start the class, you could move up a band when your teachers realise the band above might be better for you.

Best wishes
