When's Your First Exam? - May 13th 2009, 06:33 AM

Well if you're like me and are doing GCSE's or are taking an A Level exam then you know the exams aren't far away and for some of us they've already started so when's your first exam?

Also, post tips for those of us who are stressed about exams =D.

Mine first one's today in Music...I hope I can remember everything.

2 Maths exams on the 20th of May.
1 Maths exam on the 22nd of May.
2 R.S exams on the 2nd of June.
1 Biology exam on the 4th of June.

Yipee!!

Maths is what I am worried about most because my teacher sucks.

The one good thing is after I have done the exam in a subject I don't have to go to the lesson until 15th of June went A2 work starts and we start UCAS applications.

I have my English As retake next Wednesday.
But my A2 exams don't start until the 9th June.
I have my last one on the 18th June and I can't wait!

I love these not-american exams. Can someone direct me to information about GCSEs and ASs and all that? I'm curious!

I just finished my last AP exam, psychology. I had Psychology, English Lit, and Studio Drawing this year, and now my courseload has dwindled to final projects and the like, excepting my last exam in Calculus III, next thursday and friday.

I am a senior in high school, and at my school, seniors don't have final exams- once you're done with your AP and IB exams, you don't have to go to classes anymore. I had my last AP exam (Physics B) on Monday (I took French Language and Calculus BC last week) and now I'm doing a senior project- I have until about June 7 to do 65 hours, and have completed 8 so far.

Oh we weren't giving the option of sitting it in January. At first I was a bit miffed because it would have got one out of the way but now I understand -- compared to core 2, core 1 is easy . In core 2 you also revise a lot of core 1, eg differentiation & intergration, and you use a lot of the skills from core 1 in core 2 so you basically get better at core 1 when you've done core 2 so hopefully you'll get a better grade this time!

Yeah it doesn't sound like your teacher is too fabulous! We have two different ones for core and stats and they're both pretty good. Am kind of counting on an A/B to be honest. Work, work, work!

Basically your GCSE & A level grades can determine the rest of your lives so the exams people are taken now are the most important exams in their life to date. It's a lovely thought isn't it? My result on these exams completely determine the rest of my life. Completely.

Someone else can explain about what they are, though Americans never seem to grasp it!

i don't really know where to direct you but i'll do my best at explaining!

GCSE's are taken when you're 15/16 at the end of what we call year 11 [equivelent to grade 10 i believe] people will normally take anywhere from between 5-11 different gcse subjects, although in theory you only need 5 but most schools make you do 10 or 11. these results determine whether you can go onto year 12 [grade 11] to do what we call your 'AS' levels. you normally start with four subjects for AS. then after AS year, you go into year 13 [grade 12] and do A levels, normally taking three subjects forward from AS and dropping one. then after year 13 its uni.

you generally get into uni based on your AS level results and predicted A level results, along with your gcse grades.. so they're all pretty important really.

i don't think that was explained very well haa. gahh the american exams/education system confuses the hell out of me. all these AP and I & II and all that.. haa.

Just adding to that, some schools let you take 5 AS Levels and drop one and do 4 or you can take 4 and carry them all on to A Level.

I've been around TeenHelp for a while, and I've always wondered the same thing. Funny, cause I was talking with a friend today about how the systems are different in the Americas from the United Kingdom.

Anywhoo. I've got only 2 exams. May 23 and May 27. Joyouss.

I actually didn't find it too difficult but then I got an E. I thought my biology was harder and I ended up with a C in that.
The most difficult thing is the way they word the questions.

Yeah. I am actually finding Core 2 easier...it's weird I have been getting a separate tutor in Core 1 and I feel a lot more confident.
I am going to fail stats epically. We learnt all of the stats topics in 2 days
Also I have a crap memory to remember all the formulas.

I was aiming for a C at least because that is what I need for Uni and I was expected a B. Maths has got me on such a downer so I have found a foundation year course I can do if I don't get the grades I need. I'm not panicking as much now.

Tomorrow is my first exam and I'm shitting it because its IT and I failed the first time (AS IT) because the questions arent ...'IT' questions. Thier about a buisness and how it runs.

I'm terrified that I'll fail because I worked so hard on the coursework

Unit 1: 44/50
Unit 2: The exam
Unit 3:40/50

I want my A .. not a B ...not a C ...definately not a D or anything lower.

GCSE's are taken when you're 15/16 at the end of what we call year 11 [equivelent to grade 10 i believe] people will normally take anywhere from between 5-11 different gcse subjects, although in theory you only need 5 but most schools make you do 10 or 11. these results determine whether you can go onto year 12 [grade 11] to do what we call your 'AS' levels. you normally start with four subjects for AS. then after AS year, you go into year 13 [grade 12] and do A levels, normally taking three subjects forward from AS and dropping one. then after year 13 its uni.

you generally get into uni based on your AS level results and predicted A level results, along with your gcse grades.. so they're all pretty important really.
to add on to this you also can get onto college courses with 5 a* to cs college is nething from 16 yrs old to 18/19 depending what you are studying at which level there is vocational subjects aswell as AS

You still have time for learning the forumlas!! They're important because you haven't got a snowballs chance in hell without them.

So I think these are the most important:

z = X - M / Signma (funky sign I dont have on my keyboard)

If you write this down, write down X, M (mean) and Sigma (standard deviation) and then put either table 3 or table 4 (whichever is relevant) You can get up to 3 marks just for doing that! Not a hard one to learn either

CONFIDENCE INTERVALS! On every single past paper -- learn it! Great thing is you only have to learn one side because the other side is the same just with a plus! You can get up to 2 marks just for writing down the forumla on a 4 mark question so it's worth knowing. Oh, and watch out, because I often lose a mark for rounding to 3.s.f too early in my working -- work to 4.s.f until your final answer

equation for working out the regression line, relatively easy I think

y = a + bx

the regression line questions are often up to 4 marks and all you have to do is type numbers into the calculator!

So if you are only going to learn 3 equations, learn those 3. What I have done is written out all the equations I need to know and stuck them on the wall opposite my toilet It has worked! You have just under a week that is plenty of time if you start now!

Lolllll hold on, if you fail exams you're not allowed to go to grade 12? What if you want to go to uni? 0____0

In america, you take an SAT I that's just reading, writing, and math and/or an ACT (reading, writing, math, "science"). Then you can take more subjects with an SATII. And then you may choose to take "college level" exams in AP, which you might be able to write off for credit when you get to uni.

Your admissions is mostly based on your SATI and SATII scores, though, if any. And by the way, these exams are expensive. I spent more than 1000 dollars on exams alone

Re: When's Your First Exam? - May 14th 2009, 10:16 PM

Well you have to generally get at least 5 A*-C grades to go into Year 12. Subjects such as Chemistry, Biology, Physics, English Literature, English Language, Maths, (any more?) require that you have generally a grade B in that subject to be able to take that subject to A Level -- sometimes grade A.

So you take your GCSE's, you pick 3-5 A Level subjects (dependent on where you go to school/college) and do those in Year 12 (called AS Level). Generally if you take 4/5 for AS, you will drop down to 3 subjects in Year 13 (called A2) due to course load, as no university asks for more than 3. Though some people don't, there are of course the stories you hear of people having a rediculous number of A levels (7!!).

As I said, you need 5 A*-C to do AS level (normally), certain subjects require an A/B. You then take AS exams at the end of Year 12 and sometimes in January too. These are externally moderated. You generally have to get a D in your AS exams to continue to A2. You can resit modules though this has to be declaired when you're applying to University -- certain Univerities won't accept people who have resat modules and for certain courses no University will accept people who have resat (eg medicine) -- and it just generally looks bad to have to resit modules.

If you don't get the grades ... people tend to resit certain modules or take the year again or just drop out. If you want to go to University, you get the grades. Also, you need to get fairly decent grades to get into a fairly decent University. If you get crap grades at the end of A2, chances are you're not going to get into any University or just get into a crap University. If you get brilliant grades then you're more likely to get into a good University. Good University generally means better career prospects and better salary. Bad University means worse career prospects, generally worse salary (there are exceptions of course!!).

Universities look at your GCSE grades, AS grades and your predicted A2 grades (your teachers make this, as a rule of thumb it's normally one grade above your AS grade). When I was doing my GCSE's everyone (especially on here) was telling me that GCSE's aren't important. Now I'm in AS year and actually, yes they are. Every single University I have looked at for the course I do has specific GCSE requirements and gives you points based on how many A*s, As, Bs, etc you have. GCSEs are a huge indicater to Universities and do sway whether you get offered a place or not -- one University I looked at gives 1/4 of the weight of you getting a place or not to GCSEs! Other 1/4 things like AS, interview, work experience. So they are important, regardless of what people say, they are very important.

So yes, if you want to go to University and you want to go to a GOOD University, you work hard and get the grades. Schools/colleges certainly have no problems kicking people out, looks bad on them if you do badly!

yeah if you don't get five gcse's grade C or above including maths, english and science you can't go onto year 12 [grade 11]. people will either have to re-take or they leave school and get a job.

from what i've heard if you don't get gcse passes you've not got much hope at as and a level anyway even if you were allowed to go onto it.

at my school you need at least a B grade at gcse in any subject you want to carry through to year 12 [grade 11] at AS level.

edit: oops i just realised that Rachel explained it all already..
