Exam And University Related Worries - August 24th 2016, 06:55 PM

I switched to an online school program that is self paced, due to anxiety, depression, and allergies. I ended up being really stressed and going through about a year period of doing very little schoolwork.

Now I am preparing for an exam and find it hard to focus, and work.

I am very concerned for the future. I want to attend university, possibly next year or the year after. I really want to by next year, but I am behind in my studies and I find it hard to focus.

I am scared I won't finish high school for a while because I cannot focus and I don't ever feel ready to take exams for my high school program right now. I have not done a single exam or finished a single course.

I don't know what to do.

Re: Exam And University Related Worries - August 25th 2016, 11:55 AM

Hey there,

I'm in a kind of similar situation. I graduated and want to do post graduate, but haven't been in the right frame of mind. It can be disheartening at times to see others go on to further their studies. But you have to remember that you are doing the best you can, given your mental health issues, which others your age, might not have. Personally, I think it's great that you are doing online schooling and want to go to university...I know it can be tempting at times to give up, so you're doing really well to keep going!

One of the symptoms of depression is a lack of focus. And I bet the anxiety doesn't help either as the lack of focus seems to add to your worries about not finishing school. For revision, it's good to do short bursts of say 20 minutes. Try to keep things interesting such as using different coloured pens, making mind maps, flash cards, or using apps and websites to test your knowledge etc. If you feel you really can't focus, do something else, and come back to revision when you feel a bit better. Also, make sure you're getting enough sleep and exercise too as these things can add to the lack of focus issue.

It also sounds like you could do with some structure. Perhaps you can make a timetable for all the courses you are taking, and try to do a bit every week? Even if it's something small like 5 minutes a day, it can help you to regain focus a bit, and help to make you feel like you are progressing.

Try not to worry about being behind, or about not finishing high school. You need to do things at your own pace. Worrying about or rushing things, may only increase your anxiety. There is no rush, or competition. You will finish high school, and I believe that you will get into university too.

Lastly, are you getting any help for your anxiety and depression? If not, I think it may benefit you to talk to your doctor and perhaps look into counselling.
