Troubled with 11th Grade Classwork and Course Selection for 12th - April 3rd 2019, 07:14 PM

Howdy all,

I realise that it's been a while since my last post, and honestly, not a lot has changed since that time. In fact, I feel as if some aspects have just grown increasingly worse.

As some of you might not know, I consider myself a profound writer. However, my English grade is currently the lowest on my evaluation chart (87, which I consider to be still quite impressive, although my parents only view 80s as 'good' and anything under as 'horrible'). Why is this the case, might you ask? Well, it's tied in with the workload, and my attention span. When we were doing The Merchant of Venice (which I despised, since we have no use for Shakespeare's archaic version of the language), I only absorbed roughly 90% of the knowledge for the test, as I was not able to fully break down the subject matter due to the story's wording. As of right now, we have to annotate and comment on the entirety of a 1100 word article on agnosticism and atheism, and as someone who likely doesn't believe himself, I thought I'd find this very interesting, but boy was I wrong - some 13-16 paragraphs? On one article? And we have to annotate every single one?! What has become of the English curriculum? Now we were assigned a short story, as well, and I had to read through that twice, which took roughly a grand total of 150 minutes, and define characteristics of two characters, and their relationship to a certain object. Then, we have to author and present an essay based upon it. For some reason, this all seems much more difficult than any other strain of work Iíve ever been assigned throughout my school tenure.

Then, I was spoken to in anger by school authority over my behaviour in said class. I spent approximately 50% of my time in there today making a scene and worrying about my performance, all because I felt overwhelmed. This leads me to believe that perhaps I donít belong in there, or I might need to familiarise myself with higher concentrations of work on my own time to prepare for the onslaught that will be coming in the timespan of Q2 2019. Now, the main issue I have with this is that I make a valid attempt to run a Garryís Mod server (Trouble in Terrorist Town) every single day, even when Iím asleep and / or at high school, and update it on a weekly basis, as well as play on it on a daily basis. This is something that I am very passionate about, and I do not wish to relinquish ownership, even temporarily, nor can I locate enough people I can trust that are willing to adopt the role of trial moderator to handle problems that occur while I am absent (some canít even be prevented without access to the server console, which I own; ex. DDoS attacks). On top of this, I am also hardcore addicted to the video games I play, as well as an adult role-playing site entitled F-List (Iíve been on it for nearly 3 years at this point, and itís too good a place for me to quit, really) and Internet photographic pornography. So much so, to the point where I believe that it might be playing a key role in my attitude adjustment over the recent past. Iím not sure how Iíll be able to manage the things that I normally do alongside the homework and books Iíll be receiving, especially when Iíll be entering post-secondary. Heck, I'm not even sure if I want to pursue an English degree, some sort of acting degree, or a computer science/etc. degree yet, and I'm not sure if I'll need to take pre-calculus or physics (and my first impressions are that I won't last a day in either).

Sure, other issues might be in play here, but those are topics for another day. Until then, farewell, and please help. Whether you had some kind of comment or constructive criticism or other aid, I advise you to share it, for my own benefit.

Hey there,

It sounds like you are dealing with a lot at the moment. It's understandable that you'd be concerned about how you will keep up with everything when you have so much going on with school. I remember how swamped I was my Junior year of high school. What are some of the course options available to you for 12th grade? Something that might help is to try and take an elective that you'd enjoy such as a creative writing class or art etc. I know that when I was in an art class my junior year it helped to balance some of the stress of the other classes I was taking. It might help you to do something like that.

As for college, I don't know that you need to know your major right away. I know people who didn't know what they wanted to major in until they took a few classes. For the longest time I thought I wanted to major in psychology and I ended up realizing it was not the right degree path for me. I've heard some people say that it's a good idea to take a few classes that relate to the majors you are interested in to try and get an idea as to whether or not those classes work for you.

No problem if it's been a while since your last post. I'm glad you came back to update us on your situation!

I think your english grade is good and I'm glad you do too! I'm sorry that your parents don't see it the same way though. Sometimes it's easy for parents to forget that a lot of hard work goes into getting your grades and they may not understand just how hard it can be! The workload for English can be overwhelming at times, more so if you struggle to understand the texts fully (Shakespeare can be a pain with that archaic language!) I'm wondering if you found ways around that? For me, I would read the text and then if I didn't understand it fully, I would look up summaries online to get a better understanding. I feel your pain with how long it takes to read a text, annotate and write an essay. It can take up a lot of time. Using a planner can help with breaking down assignments into parts that you can manage more easily with your time.

It makes sense that with the stress of school and everything else, you may have acted out in class and then received a stern talking to afterwards. I understand that you don't want to relinquish control over your server, but is it possible to cut back slightly, or find out when you have assignments and exams and give everyone a warning that you won't be able to keep the server up and running at those times? You don't have to give it up if it's something you are really passionate in, but keeping everything in moderation and being able to balance school work with gaming and working on the server may help so that you aren't spending too much time on one thing and not on another.

Is it possible to talk to someone such as a teacher who may be able to help you with your subject choices in preparation for university? It's okay if you don't know exactly what you want to do yet. Keep your options open.

Take care and hope things get better for you!
