Question Should I wait to join cross country/track at my school? - August 3rd 2009, 07:57 PM

This summer, I planned to become in better shape to run with the cross country team this fall. I am worried for a couple of reasons. One is, I haven't gone to their optional practices yet because I'm worried about what people may think of me, and think that I'm fatter than everyone else, so they may not be very understanding. I am not obese or fat, I'm just not a runners build, and my stomach shows slightly.... I also cannot run more than a very optimistic maximum of 2 miles right now, and I think its 3.1 miles each race as a standard. I fear that I will look dumb because I don't know anything about the sport and I'm going into senior year joining my first sport.

Additionally, my family is taking a 2 week trip during the first 2 weeks of practices (not during the school year thankfully). I will be back intime for a couple practices before school starts, but I'm worried that I won't be prepared. I still fear going to the summer optional practices and I just am very confused right now. I am also for some reason scared to email the coach because I feel that he'll think I'm dumb and not strong or cannot do anything well.

Should I wait and get better at it (I have a bit of asthma and started running in late june) or should I wait till winter to join track? Thanks.

i don't think you necessarily have to wait. if there are optional practises there then i think you should i go. i know they make them "optional" but if you want to make the team - it's a good idea to go to them. it doesn't matter if you're not that great yet, you've just taken up the sport and that's the whole point of going to the practises, to get better at it.

send the coach an email explaining that you're a novice to the sport but are interested in going along to the training if you really want.. but as long as it's open to everyone i don't see why you can't just go along without emailing first.

don't worry what other people will think of you.. i'm sure no one is really going to be that judgemental, but if they are then who cares? what have you got to lose? i reckon you should go for it.

also.. coaches like to see improvement. so if you show how much you're improving week by week they're more likely to be impressed.

..and our dreams will break the boundaries of our fears..

Hey there. I'm actually in track myself and you shouldnt worry about not being good enough at all. Seriously, I suck at all things sports but the great things about track is that its more individual than group, so its all about personal improvement. So even if you're not the best runner, you'll get stronger over time and thats what its all about. You dont even have to run, you could try throwing events too. Plus, track is really fun because you can make a bunch of new friends in the process.

And dont worry about looking stupid because you've never joined track before, you'll catch on pretty quick.

Btw, welcome to TH

Yesterday I saw you kissing tiny flowers
But everything that lives is born to die
And so I say to you that nothing really matters
And all you do is stand and cry.

Music is life. Start living.
