new school - January 20th 2009, 04:09 PM

I start a new school tommorrow. It has about 1,900 students. The one I went to before had about 150 students. To say I'm nervous would be an understatment. I'm scared about new classes, new students, and the building is so hugh, I'm afraid I'll get lost. Not to mention my friend who goes there isn't talking to me right now. So any advice on going to a new school/making friends would be amazing!

Re: new school - January 20th 2009, 04:20 PM

The best thing to do is too see it as making new friends and moving away from people you know. It is like a new start - a chance to be who you always wanted to be. The staff will be aware that you're new so will give you time to adjust and building knowledge comes with time so do not worry about it.

The best way to make friends is, cliched as it sounds, to be yourself. That way friends you make will like you for being you and not the fake you which will be hard to maintain. I've never been to a new school myself but when people have transferred into my old school someone was asked to keep an eye on them see if they were settling in ok

ya, I am super excited about it. just nervous too. They're assigning me an "ambassador" to show me to all my classes and what not. I really don't want one the because that just emphasizes the fact that I'm new.

The ambassador is likely to be inconspicuous so it could be worse, it's unlikely they'll wear a sash with AMBASSADOR on it

If you don't want one tell the headteacher so, that you just want to blend in.

I would laugh if they had sashes. And as much as I don't want one, I need one. Without one I would probably end up in the pool for drawing class.

Hey there,

That sure sounds like a nerve wracking experience, but don't worry too much about it. There may be a lot of students, but all the more people to make friends with, right? And I'm sure that ambassador will help you out and show you around.
New schools take some getting used to (especially when the sizes differ so much), but I'm sure you can manage.
Let us know how it goes! And good luck
Nat.

I would love your chance to go to a new school. People do not know you there and you can become a new person without the students teasing you for past mistakes or the teachers judging you based on your siblings

Re: new school - January 20th 2009, 06:04 PM

that's one of the things i'm most excited about. At my old school i was labeled as "weird, artsy, offbeat, too unique ect... but i can start over and "recreate" myself. Of course after awhile I'll probably get a similar stereotype. But that ok, there are much worse ones.

Re: new school - January 20th 2009, 09:29 PM

umm. be yourself? in a school with that many people there is bound to be a place that you'll fit in. and, though it may be hard, at least for me it would be, just try to make friends. me personally, i would probably just sit there and wait for people to come up to me. thats not the best approach, but thats me unfortunately. =/ . so take the initiative to introduce yourself to people. and i guess, just ask for directions. its embarressing and sounds lame and all, but its better than arriving late right? just try to view it optamistically. i THINK i would love to move, just to start out new. but in reality, i would be scared, nervous, and maybe just a tad peeved at my parents. but i still THINK that it would be just lovely to start anew. but thats just me. maybe you love your old life. in that case, view it as a way to meet new people. character building? lmao. make sure to stay in touch with all of your old friends and stufffff

i should have clarified. I didn't move, just switched schools. So it's not totally new. And I can still hang out with my old friends.

Re: new school - January 21st 2009, 09:05 PM

Overall my first day went very well. I was shocked by the shear number of students, but got used to it quickly. I really haven't made any friends yet. Halfway through the year friends and cliques and what not are already established. So, hopefully, I can find a group of friends to hang out with. In the meantime, the friend I mentioned is good. Although, he's been in a bad mood for awhile. I like almost all my classes, and really hope to make some new friends. I think I'm really going to like it here.

And the ambassador didn't wear a sash....

Haha, told you it'd be inconspicuous. Glad you're more used to the numbers and you should find friends in due course.

I hope so. Everyone already has all their friends, i feel awkward because I don't know who to sit with at lunch.

Re: new school - January 22nd 2009, 12:22 AM

oh yeah. thats the even worse part. like during classes and what not you just sit a pay attention to the teacher and stuff. but at lunch, thats when youre out of luck. cause since its your first day, you dont really have anyone to sit with do you? its like awwwkkwaardd much? lol. no offense or anything. just saying
and if you pick partners or groups anytime soon. that would be a tad weird.

I'm surprised your ambassador did not invite you to sit with them

Re: new school - January 22nd 2009, 04:15 PM

My "real" ambassador was sick so the gave me a "replacement" ambassador, who didn't have the same lunch as me. Today the "real" ambassador was there and invited me to sit with her, but I declined and sat with my friend and some of his friends.
