Notes! - January 21st 2009, 05:22 AM

How can I take better notes? I had to skim over 4 pages of history text pages and got out of it...4 pages of typed, no double-spaced notes.
That defeats the point of notes. Like, they should be shorter, or something..
So what do you do for notes? How can I improve?

Re: Notes! - January 21st 2009, 06:58 AM

i have a pretty good memory, so i use keywords instead
so if you have like four reasons why something happens
you remember the reason by having one word that represents it
so, if say over-spending is the issue, you'd use financial?
but i guess that depends on how good your memory works.
you could also try mind maps? xx

Make bullets of only the really important information. Read the page and then go back and bullet everything that you remember since that stood out. The go and look up lists of important facts or dates and anything else that you think is *really* important.

Use bullets, markers, or words that rhyme.
Stick to the obvious stuff. Dont start writing pages & pages on 1 aspect.

Highlight! Key phrases, one or two sentences to sum up the point.

When injustice had him caged and trapped in every way,
How did Ghandi ever withstand the hunger strikes and all,
Didn't do it to gain power or money if I recall,

White space is your best friend - nobody wants to read a wall 'o text.

I always used colour alternating between a red pen and a blue pen or highlighters on handouts.

Pictures and diagrams helped me but I was doing engineering so diagrams were handy. Flow charts are very good in any subject and detail for example:

balkan war 1912 -> Serbian independence -> Assassination of Franz Ferdinand -> Austria threatens Serbia -> Russia says she'll protect Serbia -> Germany will protect Austria but must invade France via Belgium -> Austria invades-> Russia Mobilises -> Germany attacks France by the Schlieffen Plan -> Belgium's invasion brings Britain into the war.

would depict events leading up to WWI

Re: Notes! - January 21st 2009, 02:12 PM

Hey,

When I'm making notes I use key words for things that I know more about so it just reminds me. The trick to having good short notes is by using short sentences and where possible cues. The cues will just remind you what the subject is, so for instance it's history you're studying a date or a year might help you or just a name of a subject. This will help you cut down your notes vastly.

Hey there,

Key words are very important. When I make notes, I only use the most important information and highlight the key words. When there is a paragraph in your textbook, just think about why the most important parts are, or whether or not that paragraph is necessary in your notes. Shorten the sentences and use abbreviations when you can.

Re: Notes! - January 21st 2009, 05:31 PM

I handwrite my notes because it makes me reflect on whether its worth writing or not, and then I try to determine what is worth writing and what isn't. Tabbing is your friend, as is underlining and boxing.

Try to set a limit to how long the notes should be, and go from there.

Re: Notes! - January 21st 2009, 07:39 PM

maybe use shorthand? like abrv. and all that good stuff. leave out the thes and the ands and stuff.
the only problem with short hand is, well for me, like when its a really fastpaced lecture or whatnot, i tend to forget what my short hand is, and i cant understand what i was writing .
also, for book notes, just reread them again and again. reread the notes and the original.
you could also ask some friends and compare notes.
or just ask the teacher.
and for the future...hmm...i guess it just comes with time. sooner or later you'll get better at it i guess.
hmm not very helpful am i? =/
or, if you can, you can hilight things, then go over those, and take notes from them.
like a roughdraft notes, then go over them again and get rid of some stuff?

hehe. idk.
