I'm feeling kind of down lately. I'm not as driven as I need to be. How can I get more motivation? - September 7th 2009, 03:22 AM

I've never been like this before. For most of my life, I've been very optimistic and ambitious. For as long as I can remember, I've had really big goals. I'm an aspiring fashion designer, and all throughout high school I worked so hard to get into the Fashion Institute of Technology to study Fashion Design. I got in, and I just started my first year here last week. I love it here, and I'm so glad to start doing what I love, but I'm just not the same as I used to be.

This summer, I went through a really rough time. My mom's business closed, and now she's out of work and declaring corporate bankruptcy and they're foreclosing on our house. So obviously money (or lack thereof) was a big issue in my family lately. And since I'm out on my own now, and still haven't gotten a job, money continues to be an issue. So I really think that contributed to my slight depression, but I don't know...

Now that I've started college, I really want to get the old motivation and optimism that I used to have so much of. I want to make things happen for me, to further my future career and find creative inspiration, you know, all that jazz. And also, I really need some money. But for some reason, I'm just feeling so...hesitant...or scared...I'm not sure. I'm just not as driven and positive as I used to be. I guess it's because I'm scared to do so much while everything's so screwed up in my life.

So how can I become the positive, optimistic, and driven person that I always used to be? How can I bring out the passion and motivation that I seem to have lost. Sorry this is so long, but I just need some help...Thank you so much!!

You have a goal in mind, so stick to it because that will drive you to continue to work as hard as you can. I think it is OK to be scared, especially considering the big changes you went through over the summer, but I also think you should try to look at the positives of any situation. Lastly, you should take it day-by-day because it really helps to just focus on what is happening in the present.

How did Mandela get the will to surpass the everyday,
When injustice had him caged and trapped in every way,
How did Ghandi ever withstand the hunger strikes and all,
Didn't do it to gain power or money if I recall,
It's to give; I guess I'll pass it on
