What are YOU involved in? - September 16th 2009, 01:10 AM

Hello everyone!

I am in my last year of high school and I really feel like I haven't gotten as involved as I should have. My parents are being a bit of a nag trying to get me into an activity- preferably a physical activity. I feel like everyone on the current sports teams have been playing for years and have been on the team for the past 3 years of high school. The student council and spirit committee positions are all full (done from last year).

I feel like I'm at a bit of a disadvantage because I never really got into a team before, and now that I'm finally thinking about trying, it feels like I'm too late.

The only team I know I am 100% sure I can get on is the girls wrestling team (because, frankly, no one joins the girls wrestling team and they will take anybody). I'm kind of interested in this idea, but I'm not sure I'm really into it.

So, to get to my question, what are YOU involved in at school? What year did you join? How long have you been doing it? And-lastly- why do you like it so much?

When I was in high school I was in the basketball team the 4 years. I was also in the yearbook, spanish literature club, volleyball, and mock trail. So much in my plate.
But now that I'm in the university I'm in this new club called "proyecto zorro" we are building a car from nothing and we race against other universities in Mexico, if we win we will then go to the USA and compete there.
Here are some pictures of our car

Re: What are YOU involved in? - September 16th 2009, 01:31 AM

Let's see:

I have been rowing fall/spring every year since 8th grade (except this fall).
I have been on swim team since 7th grade every winter.
I participate and now run our SADD group since freshman year (Students Against Destructive Decisions)
I am apart of National Honors Society,Student Ambassadors, Peer Mediation, International Club, Intergenerational Club, Math Team, Amnesty International, Junior State of America, Pumpkin Festival, Mountain Sports Club, SALSA (Students Advocating Life Without Substance Abuse), Armenian Association, Relay for Life, Best Buddies and I think that's it?(Most since freshman year)

Basically, I do crew because I love it. I like being active and meeting people from our neighboring town. Swim team keeps me active and I love the water

As for SADD, I enjoy raising awareness that destructive decisions are in fact, bad choices! We do a lot of educating younger grades and hosting events on Friday nights to keep people from drinking.

My other clubs are less important, but I participate regularly. I do volunteer work for all of them It's nice to be involved.

Join a sports team!! Any team! It's worth a try, a lot of people start in high school randomly. I hear volleyball is fun and well as tennis and field hockey

Hope this helped!

Re: What are YOU involved in? - September 16th 2009, 03:33 AM

In high school, my friends and I formed an informal group, if you will, where we basically used a table in a hall way, took some chairs from a near-by classroom during recess and played whatever card games. We actually formed a card-playing club, although it wasn't an official club. A few classrooms also had some boardgames, so we'd nab them and play them, then bring it back before the recess ended. We actually grew to have quite a few "members", although since it wasn't official, I don't know if you'd call them members or not.

Also, during the card-playing club, we later got our hands on a bigger table and more chairs, so some of us played whatever card game while others did some homework, helped each other out before homework or got offered/demanded to help some other people (actually quite a few people) to help them out. Happily, most of us (the ones who weren't begging for help or weren't more "recent members") were in most of the same classes so sometimes we'd also pull out some cards if the entire class finished early and if the teacher wasn't too much of a hardass that day. Some teachers actually joined in with the card-playing, both in recess and in the classes.

Other than that, there was a math club that, well, wasn't that great. Mostly it allowed us to do some complex test from University of Waterloo and I joined in just for the fun of it.

Earlier on, I joined in a computers club, which basically consisted of either doing amateur programming or playing whatever computer games (we had to bring the games). We could bring our own computers or try to upload the game onto the school's computer, providing the game wasn't insanely large, so most people brought their own computer. I dropped out of it by the end of that year because some teachers were too hyped up over somewhat violent games and eventually a bunch suggested we play some silly Internet games. That's when I quit it.

As for sports, I only joined in the sports that were involved in Gym classes, other than that, I didn't bother.

So overall, the card-playing club lasted for several years until we all graduated. Probably was the most fun out of all the other clubs that were available and that I joined.

For university, I'm in clubs for biology and psychology. I used to also be part of the chemistry and physics club (same club) but since I'm mostly doing neuro courses or other psych or biology courses and no chemistry nor physics, I haven't renewed my membership.

I am rather like you to be honest Nat; I am involved in absolutely nothing and certainly don't intend to be! That is mainly to do with my anxiety though. I think it is mostly important to get involved in college; there are so many things to get involved with there in comparison to high school where it seems like a very limited choice.

Re: What are YOU involved in? - September 16th 2009, 07:57 PM

Grade 9 to 12, I was a member of our senior concert band. That was really fun, we put on lots of concerts, got to go on trips, and played at music festivals and competitions. In grade 11 and 12 I joined band exec, kind of like the administration for the band. We'd help the teacher schedule concerts, work out the programs, decide where to go for trips, what to do on them, and organized fundraisers. It was great because being involved like that really made us feel like it was our band.

In grade 11 I joined the city's Youth Symphony Orchestra, and I stayed with it until I graduated. There were some amazing opportunities there, we put on a lot less concerts and we didn't travel, but we'd get workshops with the city's Symphony Orchestra members pretty often, and occassionally we go to play at the auditorium with them too (so crowded having two symphonies on stage at once lol). When the Toronto Symphony Orchestra came to our town, we had a workshop with them too, which was really amazing. They had a lot of good tips to share, and the workshops were really fun.

I wrote math contests all throughout high school...in no particular order, since I can't remember which is which, the Fermat, Pascal, Cayley etc. That was fun, the school gave us a cookie after each contest lol. The math was good too. We didn't have a math club though, so when I was in grade 12 we made one. Basically it was a really informal group, we'd work on more challenging problems, practiced for contests, and the senior members tutored the younger ones. Also we made up really lame math jokes.

I volunteered during high school, with the Regional Multicultural Youth Council. I think I started in grade 10. We organied information sessions for schools about racism and tolerance, and acted as youth advocates. I organized an anti-racism art contest for students in the city, and we got some really good submissions and put them up at the art gallery. I worked there over the summer too, and during the summer we'd do more involved things with the community, like hold barbeques.

I joined the Youth Advisory Council in grade 9, and stayed with it until grade 11. It was a group the city organized to help them plan Youth Week every year, and to help run the events. I would have liked to do it again in grade 12, but the meetings ran during my evening class.

In university, I didn't join anything my first year. I wanted to join the French club, but apparently we're very disorganized, because the club ran at the same time that my French class was This year I'm joining the math club, and I signed up to get information about the debate club. I'll join if it fits my schedule. I'm also looking to get involved as a writer or editor for our school's satiric newspaper.

in high school i was in the team for..

i also did the school production, that was pretty fun. oh, and i was forced to do student council one year.. that was pretty boring i must say.

now i'm in sixth form college and i get away with doing one period a week of "film studies" as an extension.. [it's compulsory to do at least one extension. we basically watch films.. it's not too bad i guess.

In High school, I did marching band all 4 years. Became section leader for low brass.
I did tennis for 3 years (freshman-junior)
I did wrestling for 3 years too (soph-senior)

...Yeah that's about it. I've tried stuff in college but haven't stuck to anything.

In high school I was on the wrestling team (freshman and sophomore year) and softball team (freshman-senior years). I was in marching band (freshman-senior years), too. I was also a member of Jazz Band, our school's GSA and our school's volunteer organization, SMILES (freshman-senior years). In uni, freshman year I didn't do as much. I was in the History Club, College Democrats and the Fitness Club. This year, my sophomore year, I'm in those same three, but I also am a member of a Bible Study and SGA.

Re: What are YOU involved in? - September 17th 2009, 02:35 AM

When I was in highschool, I generally stayed away from the sports teams for the same reason as you mentioned. Most people on the teams have been playing for years, and I hadn't. Try intramurals though, those are just for fun, so it really takes the competitive edge off.

In the four years that I was there I joined...

1. A group that was student led against the use of tobacco/smoking, and went to middle schools around the area to inform them of the health effects and help high school students quit, etc. (Grade 9)

2. I joined the girl's rugby team, but it was cancelled after we couldn't find any teacher willing to coach that season. This was in grade 12, when I felt comfortable enough to go and make a fool of myself out in the field. I still have no idea how to play rugby!

3. And last but not least, I joined a student action group at my school in grade 12, where we organised things like the grad blood drive, food drive, relay for life, all those type of things. It did take some time but it was really fun and worth it in the end. It's nice to know you can make a difference in your community. :]

I'd say just find something you think you'd enjoy, or would like to give a try and convice some close friends to come with you! Good luck. :]

I've graduated, but the clubs are definitely what I miss most from my time at school! I was in quite a few things: Stand4Peace, Library Council, Leadership, Environment Club, Choir, and Teen Action Group. I was in most of them for all my highschool years, except choir because we eventually had no choir due to lack of participants. I enjoyed the groups because they involved a lot of helping out here and there and it was nice to feel like I was making a difference, at least a bit of a difference. Choir and Library Council were fun because I love both reading and singing of course!

I took a tap dancing class and had a blast. That's not really extra curricular, though. You might see if there's a dance team at your school if you like dancing?
I was also in scholastic's team for a while. That was really cool because it wasn't really about intelligence, but about knowing useless facts. And it was really cool making friends with dorky people such as myself.

In high school, I was pretty much, the typical Jock. Minus the football .

I was in:

-Soccer (since grade 3)
-Lacrosse (Since grade 9)
-Basketball (Since grade 10)
-Volleyball (since grade 7)
-Cross country team (sine grade 7)
-Band (since grade 7, in 3 different ones)

I absolutely love fitness. I love to run. Also, I love to play music, So pretty much everything is self explanatory. Unfortunately I am now out of high school. But I am still doing sports.

If were you, I would consider doing wrestling, its a great sport. Just be careful that you don't get injured while doing it.

Let us know what you decide.
