Exclamation My future plans.. help! - November 30th 2009, 04:27 AM

hey! :)
For the past 4 years I've been wanting to enlist into the Marines and for those 4 years I had neglected to talk to my parents about it because they don't really agree with me on it. As of right now I'm in my first year of college and I'm waiting till i get my bachelors to become an Officer. With that said, I'm getting fearful that my parents aren't going to be okay with this, and i really want to have their support. I keep feeling like I'm hitting a road block with them every time I try to have a meaningful discussion on it.
I KNOW it's a long time from now, but this is a huge leap and having them support me will make all the difference.
I'm so sorry if I rambled, it was kinda hard to type down what I was thinking:P
ANYTHING would be helpful.. please? lol
thank you in advance!

Hey I completely understand where you're coming from! I told my parents I want to go into law enforcement after being in the medical field for a few years and they were like "Wtf, thats dumb!" but Im still going to go for it

I guess you can still try to talk to them about it, tell them how important it is to you, but if they still are against it, GO FOR IT. You do what you want to do, and if, in the end, for whatever reason, it turned out to be a bad idea, at least you tried At least thats my philosophy, I dunno if anyone else here has a different perspective on it.

But hey, I wish you good luck in being an Officer

Thank s much
I really do try, but it's almost like they don't want to hear that their "little girl" wants to be a marine, ya know? and i can sort of understand, but having them be okay with it would be nice. lmao

Ohh I can relate. My dad doesnt want to think about the fact his daughter wants to grow up to shoot people in drug raids He doesnt even like it when I ask him to teach me how to shoot a gun! Psht, parents these days

Nah, i think its cool if you want to be in the Marines. My advice would be to really start getting in shape for it, if you haven't already done so. You know, just to lesson the blow of starting rigorous Marine training? Surprise em when a chick comes in and can already do 50 push-ups

I'd love to see the looks on their faces when a girl outruns the out-of-shape guys

I was in the Army National Guard for nine years so I respect people who want to join the military in general. However, I also remember the hard times like Iraq, the times away from home, waiting for hours for things to happen, etc. My advice though would be to consider the commitment. It's a bigger commitment than you realize. Obviously stay in college and get your degree because it will help a lot. If you can start working out now it will help you that much more. I think the Marines run a 18 minute 3 mile, so that could be something to work on. Good luck and if you need more help just ask.

My bro is a cop and he puts in a lot of hours but it's an interesting career. He wants to go into more than just a cop but still it's respectable. Like I was telling arcadexbrigade start checking into it and getting prepared for it. Good luck with your decision!
