Cyber School? - December 16th 2009, 12:11 AM

Alright, so I have a quick question for anyone willing to answer.

I've so far missed 14 days of school (not counting excused absences) because of difficultly getting my depression to leave me alone in the morning. The maximum amount of days I am permitted to miss is 10. So obviously I have exceeded that amount. But, I have a note from my psychiatrist that recommends cyber school or something they call a "mirror school" where there's only about 60 kids in the whole school and I won't be distracted by the whole social mess that school creates.

I think I'm leaning more towards cyber school.. but being the indecisive person that I am, I'm really not sure which decision I should make. So maybe someone could give me some tips on this? I'm kind of nervous about making a decision like this one, because I know that it 's extremely important. I do feel like I would maintain better grades doing work at home, but I would like to base my decision not only on grades, if that makes sense.

If you can help me make this whole decision thing a bit easier for me, I'll love you forever Thanks!

P.S: The reason I'm a bit hesitant is that if I were to do school work online, I would miss out on the social aspect of school as well, which I suppose is equally important. If anyone could possibly suggest ways that I could still continue beings social outside of school that would really be great too.

A lonely soul in a land of broken hearts

If you have any good friends in school currently, continue to let them know you want to hang out with them in your free time on the weekends. Explain to them your situation and i'm sure they would be there for you in this time of need. Cyber school seems like it would be a good idea to you as you wouldnt have to worry about making it to school everyday, but would still be in school.

I've started doing a lot of my classes online. If you're self motivated, online classes would definitely be a good idea. I've found them beneficial just because I can spread how my homework load a lot more efficiently, so I'm not burning myself out all the time.

As for the social aspect, I do believe your school should still let you attend games, dances, etc, and you can still keep in touch with all your friends. As long as you keep in touch with everyone, the social aspect won't really go away.

Ok. I think this is a bad idea and I'll explain why.

When you're off school with depression are you doing your work? I'm going to hazard a guess at no, and that's because depression is interfering with your ability to work. This is not going to be any different when you're at home. Depression by definition takes away your self-motivation, and without the structure that a real-life school gives you'll struggle even more.

I've been in your situation myself and dropped out of school for depression and your right, the social aspect does go. At first it's fine and you'll still meet up with your friends, but as horrible as it sounds, out of sight is out of mind. Eventually they will call less and less and you will become more and more isolated. If anything is detrimental to mental health it's isolation.

I know it's hard, honestly I do because I have been in the exact same situation that you are in now, but you need to get back up and go to school. If you think that is taking more than you have then you won't cope with doing all the self-motivation, structuring your day with an online school when there isn't teachers and friends around you. Ask your parents to help you get up and go.

Do whatever you can to make it easier, drop a class? Perhaps you could set up a meeting with your school and yourself and your parents to talk about how it coming to school can be made easier for you and how the school can support you through this.

Genuinely from experience it will be the best choice for you. I really wouldn't advise opting for online schooling becuase you will become less motivated, more isolated and the outcome will be worse grades and worse depression.

My vote is to stay away from online classes and an online school in general?

1. If you aren't motivated to get up in the morning to go to class as it is, then you won't be motivated to go on your computer to do work when you can do other things like check your email, Facebook, play games, ect. There will be even less motivation to begin with.

2. I am not sure of the accreditation that some cyber schools provide. When facing a prospective employer, I believe cyber schools come up second to a real college degree, if that makes any sense.

3. I'm assuming from my own situation that you will be even more depressed at home. If you're by yourself all the time, that can make your depression worse than it already is. Additionally, you will never have the chance to make new friends if you stay at home all the time and it will be harder to develop new friendships and relationships. It'll also be harder to maintain active in clubs and sports, and hobbies you should be interested in to combat your depression.

I understand how hard depression can be and I'm sorry that it has had such a large, negative influence on your life. Please get better soon, and remember, recovery is possible.
