UK School Marks?? Vs US and Canada??? GPA vs Second Uppers? - December 28th 2009, 08:36 AM

What is the UK GPA/Mark scheme like.... its very different compared to the US/Canadian system.

I am considering PhD business programs. Like I can get into a masters program with my undergraduate marks. So when i checked out the UK business schools like University of Manchester they require second uppers?

Whats that? What does that mean in terms of percentage...

when i googled it i found a few sources that says it is about 65 percent and up???

70% - 1.1 (first class with honors)

60% - 2.1 (second class uppers with honors)

50% - 2.2 (second class lower with honors)

40-50% - 3rd (normally without honors and this is just about a pass)

But they will probably ask for different percentage scores from you because
1) A US undergrad degree is not to the same level as a UK degree
2) in the US the typical % scores achieved are higher than in the UK. Here if you're getting 80% at University you're pretty much a genius, exams are written and scored so that less people get high grades.

Best bet is to email the Universities directly with your scores and see what they have to say.

Manchester is great by the way, I have an offer there for Medical Biochemistry starting September. I'm not going to take it but thats for different reasons.
