Calling any/all New Zealanders!! University help please? - January 2nd 2010, 04:27 PM

OK so I've been wanting to go to university in New Zealand for YEARS ... I have dual-nationality etc ... but I don't really get how it works.

I've been on websites etc but there don't seem to be set entry requirements like there are here in the UK ... ? Like most just say what they're looking for in candidates. How do you show that by applying??

I have emailed an admissions person with my questions ... but only recently seeing as I only recently realised I was brave enough to pack up my life after all ... and being Christmas I have no replies

I have no idea about applying to university in new zealand. (sorry about that)

But seeing as no one has replied Im guessing your going to have to wait for the replies from admissions.
Is it worth making a phone call to a couple of them? (might be expensive I know, but it might be worth it to speak to someone and get clear answers straight away)

Also I just wanted to suggest that if it takes a very long time to find out all this information, it might be worth defering for a year.
As in... spend the next year here maybe doing some kind of foundation course/ working/ voluntary work. While you get everything sorted to go to new zealand the year after.

And I just wanted to add, your very brave... it seems like such a long way to go, I had trouble moving in this country lol.
Good luck and I hope it all goes well.

ok, so my best friend is from NZ and she is applying to university next year and from what i've heard it can vary a bit from university to university as to their admissions process. apparently the university of auckland is one of the most highly thought of universities in NZ.. and i've found a few links that might be helpful from their website..

I've already deferred for a year, and am working through it because I was kinda imagining having to go in the UK. But thanks Rosemma ... I have family over there, but they're not really helping tbh

And Elle thanks for the links! Looking through, the course at Auckland is different to the one I was looking at, like how it's structured. I guess I might try and scrimp for flights over in the summer and properly investigate it

She says she had dual nationality so that would mean she would pay the home student fee

Yeah I'd have thought so

except even for home students, the US fees are about 10000 times the UK fees

Think around 30,000++ a TERM for good ones.

Also why would you want to? The degrees there aren't worth as much as UK ones (at least not in the UK).

Mind you I'd apply to a few Ivy-Leagues such as Harvard, Stanford, if I could afford the fees.

It really does vary, sometimes wildly, between the universities. If the websites don't help, it's probably best to talk to someone, but with it being summer holidays at the moment, you might not get the quickest reply!

As far as I am aware, all the Universities have set entrance standards, it's mostly a matter of finding out what they are.

I'm not sure if this link will help at all, but it's worth a look.

I'll be starting applications this year, so I'll know more later in the year.
