What career can I go into? - January 4th 2010, 09:06 PM

I want to go into something with psychology... but I don't know what Icould do and make a decent amount of money... See, my mom wants me to be a pediatrician but I want to find something I'm passionate about, but still make that much money... Maybe something dealing with child's/teen psychology or maybe like rehab type things... So if you have any suggestions that would be great! Thank you!

A child psychiatrist, or even a psychological journalist? You can earn a lot of money in any profession, it just depends how high up you get in that profession.

Psychiatrists get paid absolutely ridiculous amounts, but it's more about prescribing medication than actually therapy.
Also, it requires a medical degree and specialisation, so is realisticaly going to take minimum 10 years training.

... and I don't think I could possibly pay for that much schooling at all, I mean I'd be getting by on financial aid and student loans and a few scholarships(hopefully!) So, I don't think the 10 years of schooling is very realalistic for me.

When I have such queries I refer to a site I came across in the UK. Under careers advice you just go to "Options with your subject", the under "Job Options" list will give a range of job titles and short descriptions. Now, not all of these will apply to other countries, but most of them apply to the US and Canada.
A degree in Psychology gives you the following options:
This subject would also be useful for:
  • Counsellor
  • Psychotherapist
Where you choose to work will likely determine who you work with.

You may also want to have a good look through the American Psychological Association website here. That site has information on workforce trends, salaries, careers, membership, etc. Probably the best site you will find for such information.

Definitely look into something you are interested in, not what your mom wants you to do, it's not her life or her decision to make. If she sees you're passionate about this and you've done your own research, she will understand that you know what you want and might stop mentioning the career as a pediatrician.

It would only take 10 years if you did a BSc, Masters and PhD without taking a break for employment, which is absurd. A BSc is 3 to 4 years, then you can get a well-paid job, further training will also result in pay increases, however small.
I hope this has helped, take care.

Great post

With regards to 10 years I was referring to psychiatry. This requires a medical degree. A medical degree in the USA takes minimum of 8 years, correct? And then I would have thought it would actually be over 2 years experience/specialisation within hospitals - though you should be getting paid for those two years.

Too many things Ideally I'd love to be in the secret service or something, but I think a detective is achievable in my lifetime; if it paid though, no doubt I'd be an artist, probably photographer
