January Exams - January 4th 2010, 09:55 PM

Eek! That time of year again.

Whose else is suffering!?

So I thought we could use a thread to motivate each other to revise, well, what I really mean is I'm not doing enough revision so need some motivation and thought other people could do with some too!

Make a list of what you want to get done and me and (hopefully) some others will help motivate you and say well done and stuff.
Lame, eh, but it helps me I think

My list for the next few days:
1) Chemistry module 1, revision notes
2) Chemistry flash cards for synthesis routes
3) Biology, photosynthesis revision
4) Biology past papers on photosynthesis
5) Mechanics past papers
6) Interview prep

Should keep me busy for a while...

I have A2 chemistry, biology and maths (mechanics) exams this month as well as a chemistry evaluative practical exam and a few University interviews scattered in between them!

Anyone else want to join in?

i'm meant to have AS politics and AS sociology exams.. but i've pretty much established the fact that i will fail, so i haven't decided whether or not i'm going to take the exams. i guess i should look over my notes and see if it's possible that i could somehow scrape a grade, idk.

ooh what exam boards? I've done bio, chem and maths so if you want any help let me know

you might get a shock to be honest, AS is a jump from GCSE, and surely it's only like two weeks now? I do know what you mean, I did pretty much zero work for GCSE and got As and A*s, but AS just isn't the same (or at least it wasn't for me)

Biology and Chemistry are OCR

Maths is AQA, I sat the core 1 exam last summer though so this is a resit since I got a D.

urm, one of them is the 15th i think and i have no idea when the other one is - i've given up checking my college email because i can't be bothered with all the bitchy emails from my teachers. and, because i haven't been in since half term. so.. i just don't physically know enough to do well in the exams.

Ah yes. That might be a problem.

Are you dropping out then? You could always restart the year next year.

sounds like a good plan. that is a lot of work to catch up on so if you decide to stay you should ask for some support/help catching up. Our college has an additional learning support team who support students 1:1 in subject areas they need extra help with.

I'd have though you will feel better about the situation once you know what is going on, too

Does anybody do any work for general studies?

Oh and I think C3 is a bitch, much harder than C4 to me. Which is somewhat backwards.
Maybe it's just because you have had more practice by the time it gets to C4.

Haha, no. I hate it, it's a waste of my time since no universities accept it and we get pointless homework which takes time away from my other homework.

Talking Re: January Exams - January 5th 2010, 09:59 AM

Hey I have AS Sociology- Families and Households and AS Religious Studies- Ethics modules next week which is scary as they are my first A-Level exams and the count for 20% of my A-Level grades! scary!!!

I am also doing A-level English Language and Literature but there is no January exam because of coursework which I have already done half of (the creative writing) but have not got the grade back yet and I have planned my analysis part which is due in by February half term .

I also get my GCSE Maths re-sit result back next week which is scary!! I sat it in November again cos I got a D at GCSE and I have to sit another module in the Summer! Overall I got 3A 2B 3C 1D grades in my GCSE's in 2009

In the future I would like to be a successful social worker so I will hopefully get 3C's in my A-levels and then I can go on to do a BA honors degree in Social Work and get a job

Re: January Exams - January 5th 2010, 01:55 PM

I am going mental I have 7 exams this month and my school is closed today, tomorrow and Thursday because of a bit of snow. I NEED to go to my maths lessons (wow, never thought I would say that!)
I am not stressed about biology or R.E. I am way panicking about maths though. I only really need a D which shouldn't be this difficult but my teacher is a total failure and I am getting so stressed with it now.

This is my exam timetable starting Monday.

Monday - C2 resit
Wednesday - 2 R.E resits and Stats resit - (These three are going to kill me)
Friday - C3
Tuesday - Bio unit 2 resit
Monday - Bio unit 4

(All of mine are AQA)

I've just got Psychology. I need to revise attatchments a lot because there's a ridiculous amount of studies I need to get my head around.
Other than that, I have a heap of Art coursework and the deadline is sometime in January although i have no recollection of ever being told when exactly, great!

I have an exam on Monday!!

If it is closed on Monday I have no idea what to do because there will be no teachers in. I don't know if the exam will get rescheduled or what.

I haven't had a maths or R.E lesson in 3 and a half weeks and now I have to do these exams. I had so many questions from revising that I need to ask my teachers.

I am officially in panic mode now!!!

My college is closed because of the snow and I don't know when it's opening. My first exam is on Tuesday so yeah, similar situation. But they said if it's shut on the day of an exam, they'll change the day of the exam so that people can get there without any trouble.

I have Biology on Tuesday, Psychology on Wednesday and Sociology on Friday (next week). I'm clueless about what to expect concerning grades. It's all so different from GCSE.

I'm also doing English Lit but the exam for that isn't until May, whoo-hoo!

Good luck everyone. Have fun revising, I know I won't!

Rachel do you have the email addresses of your teachers? I always seem to be emailing mine with questions hehe.

Depending what the subjects are on, you could post some questions in this thread and I can see if I can help or other people can help?

You could also try www.thestudentroom.co.uk/forums
there will defintley be someone there who can answer your questions

I had the email address of 1 teacher, she has a new one now anyway. Since the new Safe Gaurding rules came in and we got told we couldn't email teachers personal emails any more. Our teachers used to have our mobile numbers to text us if our lesson was cancelled to save us coming in and they had to delete them all.
It is ridiculous, I understand with the lower years but they should be able to trust 6th form more.

My Auntie is a Biology teacher in a college so I am always asking her for help in Biology but right now it is maths that is making me panic. I am quite happy with my biology right now
I have a few friends coming round or a revision session tomorrow but if I have any questions left then I will be asking here and the student room.

Re: January Exams - January 7th 2010, 02:58 AM

Happily I've done my finals and sadly gotten the marks back already for them so I don't think posting the work I need to do for that would be of use. When I was studying I had to finish my research paper on the neurochemical views of how dopamine and other neurochemicals affect dopamine in schizophrenia, and why the psychpharmacological agents are effective or not effective. I also had to study my ass off for a comparative anatomy, physiology and evolution course of verterbates, both through reviewing the anatomy and physiology learned in the labs as well as the stuff in the lectures and textbook (textbook went into much more detail than lectures did). Had to review for forensic psychology by looking over the guest lectures, professor's lectures and textbook material. For sociology, had not a lot to do as the exam happily wasn't cumulative. All of these were 0.5 credits but I'm also doing a 1.0 credit animal behavior course through a biological view, and so on the very last day of class for the first semester, we had a term test. There were 2 professors we had (3 in total, third one we haven't had yet) and one of the professors lived up to his reputation of making tests that were hard as hell, such as giving us outputs of MEGs on a random neuron of an insect and telling us the stimulus provided during the experiment, and we had to say the function of the neuron and how that neuron would act with other neurons. The hard part was that this was of a random insect we had never studied. Some of the multiple choice questions we had to write a few sentences explaining our choice, so if you don't know the answer, it's not 1 mark down the shitter, it's about 5 marks out of 55 in total.

For this current semester, I have to read about 60 pages in a textbook as the professor kindly forgot to tell us the reading material for the first lecture. I have to read a few more pages in this chapter for a neurology course that deals with techniques to view neurons and such. For that same course, I had to do a bit of work with fiddling with this pretty cool neuroscience program. For cognitive psychology I read the stuff already. For the animal behavior course, I have to read a few more research papers the professor wants us to read and then begin a critique on a random paper he chose. For the course in cross-cultural psychology, I have to read a good 20-30+ pages and a short article he gave us to read. The cross-cultural psychology course is on Friday so I've read the short article and have to read the assigned pages still but the neurology course has a lab/tutorial tomorrow.

i've made the decision not to do my exams after going through the specifications and i am kinda relieved.. because my college is closed now because of the freaking snow so i wouldn't be able to ask any of my teachers any questions or anything. but yeah, i emailed my teachers and my TTL explaining and i got the rudest email back from my politics teacher, makes me want to scream. he's quite possibly the most unsympathetic person i've ever met in my life. GRRRR.

but i hope everyones revision is going well and that the snow clears up soon so it doesn't effect anyones exams.

Ellie, I guess you have to understand though that you're going to get a U, which looks very bad on them. Clearly I don't know the reasons why you're not going to college but teachers aren't typically sympathetic about bad attendance, with your past history I'd say you're an exception if this is why you're not going now, but I also don't really have much sympathy for people who don't turn up.

Anyway I've done again, nothing but interview prep. Blah. I'll do some revision tomorrow and then only revision on saturday.. no interview stuffs.

Re: January Exams - January 7th 2010, 07:27 PM

Our school is now officially closed until Monday.
They have said they will open Monday but if there is more snow Sunday they may not. AQA have said that if you miss an exam because your school is closed the you just re sit it in the next exam session (summer). I do not want this to happen because then I will be doing 13 exams in the summer with no chance to resit unless I resit the year.

I will be turning up at school on Monday even if it closed just to say I was there. At least then I can say I did show up for my exam but the teachers didn't so it's not my fault.
My Dad has said to turn up on Monday with the others taking the test and if it is closed to ring the local newspaper

Me and my boyfriend were revising today and we heard that the school is closed tomorrow and we both panicked then. We sent a huge group email to everyone doing exams and have arranged a huge study group in our local library so we can all help each other. So I am a lot happier and calmer now. Still slightly panicky but calmer than I was.
The fact that I am going in to my maths and R.E exams when I haven't had a lesson in 4 weeks still makes me want to cry.

My school says we have to go in to sit our exams despite how bad the weather is. Hopefully we don't get any snow during the weekend in London. I really want to sit my exam on Wednesday as that's one less to do in June.

My college never closes, literally when every single other school in the county was closed, we were open. So that's not a problem, but if it snows really heavily I might struggle to get in as the exams are done at a different campus to the campus I go to, and it's more remote.

Re: January Exams - January 12th 2010, 04:34 PM

I have done my C2 resit yesterday which I didn't find too bad. I have definitely done better than last year but that isn't difficult since I got a U

I have 3 tomorrow which will kill me. They are all resits, I got a D in 2 and a U in 1 so my main focus is the one I got the U.

I have C3 on Friday which won't go well since I am concentrating on my resits so I will probably be resitting that in June.

Then I only have my Biology but I am quite confident about bio because it is my best and favourite subject
