In my college interviews, I was asked a lot of questions about my extra curricular activities. I think they're important.

I can't remember mine but knowing my university I'm sure they asked about it. I wasn't in any extra curriculars in HS but it can help if you want to get into SGA or other things that are in HS and college.

My university didn't have any interview process. You just apply; if you get in, you don't know the reason, and if you get rejected, you don't know the reason. So it's hard to say how important one aspect of the application is as compared to another, or what they put the most stress on. On their website, under the information for applicants, they do go over how it's advantageous for an applicant to have extra-curriculars and volunteer experience. I'd recommend getting involved in at least one activity - if it ends up being important to the colleges you apply to, it could make the difference between you getting in or getting rejected, and if it ends up not being important to them, it's not as though the activity has done anything to hurt you.

If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life
that will live on in the memories of your loved ones."

Like Jessica said, sometimes it's really hard to tell why they take you and why they don't. It really depends on the school, too... but really.. just apply to a lot of places and see what happens.

For whatever its worth, I was not active in my high school, and I got into a lot of good schools, and same with my boyfriend.

Re: Do colleges actually care?! - January 15th 2010, 02:50 AM

I know that being involved in my community and doing community service and being involved helped me out a lot with my college it and even ended up helping me to get a really good scholarship. But don't get so involved that you don't have time for yourself, friends and family.
it honestly just depends on the college sometimes. but being involved in extracurricular activities is not the deciding factor for most colleges

good luck in your search

yeah they care.

it shows what type of person you are.

Would you choose someone who does nothing in their spare time/dossing about or someone who shows initiative. That can work in a team say in a sport/band.

it shows other skills like interaction, team work etc. Its not all down to books

i think it is quite important that you can show you have other things to offer besides just the academic stuff. most colleges/uni's would prefer a more rounded person to someone who does nothing extra-curiccular wise.

I think they're important depending on where you apply and the specific things the school looks at. You should do an activity because you enjoy it, not just because it will get you into college. Also, don't do so many activities that your grades suffer, since every school will look at them.

Think about it this way. If a college has to choose between two applicants, who have the same grades and such. One has tons of extra curricular activities and such and the other has one. Who do you think they'll pick?

That happens a lot for colleges. It's best to be involved!

Yup, do them. There will definitely be some club that piques your interests!

My university might easily pick the one with only one if the applicant displays a passion for that thing, then it's finitely better than doing a ton for propriety.

Expect I'd assume only an idiot would simply list their extra curriculum activities; anyone with half a brain would talk about what they've learnt and why they're passionate about it.

^ Also true, but I saw people getting into Harvard with literally like ONE thing going for them, so it's so random (..... don't get me started on how random it was).

I think the general rule would be to be serious about something and really do it regularly (and do it well), but not to start bullshitting your app when you realize you don't have a nice padded resume.

I've always been told that it matters but I'm not sure how much weight it carries. I suppose it depends on what you're applying for. If it's something in sports, then it will definitely count but if it's for, say, computer science, I think the weight of the extracirricular events that are not related to the computer science program wouldn't have as much weight. I wouldn't say it's a deciding factor though unless it's for a sports scholarship or similar programs.

I'm a social work major and I know that the extracurricular activities and community service i was involved in definitely helped me get into my college and receive certain scholarships because I was involved. It shows you can interact with other people, and care about more than yourself. Just don't get too involved that your grades suffer, like others suggested do something that interests you and that you're passionate about

Do whatever complements your intended major. For me, extracurricular activities/volunteering were EXTREMELY important, since I wanted to major in psychology and, ultimately, become a psychological professional in the field of counseling/therapy. So having good grades was nice and all... but I honestly believe that having 600 hours of extracurricular/volunteer hours, due to my involvement in a high school peer counseling program, was what got me accepted into my university. =P
