I need some help deciding my career. - January 29th 2009, 09:07 PM

I know I'm pretty young as of now, but I want to make the decision of what I want to do in the future right now.

I like music, physics, mathematics, and electronics.

Regarding music, I'll keep that as a hobby. And I think an engineering career would be heavy on physics and mathematics, so I have thought of some engineering careers I want to do (Also some no-engineering careers):

-Electrical/Electronic Engineering
-Computer Engineering
-Mechanical Engineering
-Computer Science
-Mechatronics

I'm interested in both hardware and software side of things, I want to get deep into both subjects. So I'm mostly inclined towards electrical, computer engineering, or computer science.
I've also been told Mechatronics incorporates all of these.
I'm not sure...

What is the main difference between electrical engineering and computer engineering?
I want to study a career that will give me deep knowledge in both software and hardware. Does electrical engineering cover a broader subject?
Can an electrical engineer do what a computer engineer does and more?
Also what about mechatronics, and computer science.

Thanks, I'd appreciate some help!

Electrical engineering will be more about domestic and industry power as well as the National Grid and renewable energy.

For example you'd be expected to know how three phase works and how AC is better than DC for long distance transmission but DC is still used (for example in London Underground). You'd be expected to know stuff like transformers, equations for losses and the sinusoidal nature of electrical (ie a sign graph), electricity is also complex (real and imaginary parts)

computer engineering would be more about the voltage through computers and transistors, resistors etc. It would be on a micro scale I believe

Are you from the UK? If you are, this website offers really good information on different careers: http://www.connexions-direct.com/jobs4u/index.cfm?pid=2 also I like to look at different universities/colleges to see what the courses would be like, as this can give you a feel for what the jobs like. Also speak to a careers guidance type person.

For university courses in the UK you can also look at http://www.ucas.ac.uk/students/coursesearch/
