I prefer pen and paper. Just because it's easier to draw any diagrams.

whatever I have with me. In class, most of my teachers didn't like us to have our laptops, so mostly pen and paper.

Pen and paper, I write faster that way and my shorthand has symbols that I can't do on my laptop
That and the clicking noise of the keyboard annoys me when I'm trying to pay attention.

I have read several studies in my psych class that suggest that writing things down, as opposed to typing things out, have a better chance of being stored in your long term memory. So I always go with pen and paper. : ) Plus it also gives me a chance to buy pretty pens.

I am not in college so I have no idea. But since you said that maybe I will write my notes down and then type them into my laptop for extra effect.

I write everything down, for the reason above (it helps my memory out alot) and because laptops are not used in any of my classes. No one brings them so I would feel awkward plus I write faster then I type.

Also, I think that relying on technology that much is bad, lol. What if your computer/laptop breaks? Screwed.

You must follow your heart.

Really? A lot of people use them here? Especially those little NoteBook laptops, those are really popular.

I do about equal parts in each. Taking math notes on a computer is brutal, especially in Calculus, but for a programming class it's only sensible to bring a laptop.

The atoms that make up you and me were born in the hearts of suns many times greater than ours, and in time our atoms will once again reside amongst the stars. Life is but an idle dalliance of the cosmos, frail, and soon forgotten. We have been set adrift in an ocean whose tides we are only beginning to comprehend and with that maturity has come the realization that we are, at least for now, alone. In that loneliness, it falls to us to shine as brightly as the stars from which we came.

well at my college no one does.. people use the computers in the Library if they need to use the internet or whatever. but i am talking about UK college which is sort of equivalent to the last two years of high school in America.. at Uni i think they'll be more people who bring laptops to take notes but idk.

i think it would be easier to take notes with a laptop since i type way faster than i write, but no one uses laptops in my class either, so im not sure if we'd be allowed to. and i tend to remember things better if i were to actually write it down

It's the same at Uni... no or VERY FEW laptops. I think it's good, the majority of people on the laptops are just playing games, not actually taking notes.

I'm not in collage yet, but when I get to collage I'm not going to have to take notes...I have an IEP and in it it says I can ask the teacher for a set of their notes because I am horrible at listening to what there saying and writting or typing at the same time...But I'll try typing notes first but most likley I'll ask

Pen and paper.. For science courses it's just ridiculous to try and draw diagrams or write out equations on a laptop.

Plus laptops are just distracting, the urge to sign onto facebook would be too great.

I don't take notes for two reasons.
1- I'm not good at it.
2- the professors always upload everything to blackboard.
But I do want a smartpen to start the habbit of taking notes.

That's mainly why I write mine out even though my handwriting is illegable. Also, it's easier to produce things if you're entering them the same way you recorded them, for example if you're going to write things out or use pen/pencil and paper for a test it will be easier to come up with the answers if you wrote out your notes. Although I did have a professor whose notes I wrote and then he let us type out our test answers since they were essay tests. I decided against it and figured you know what my handwriting looks like this is what you get for attempting to confuse my brain!

Most professors post their notes online either before or after class, so I print them off, and if I have them in time for the lecture I write directly on them.

I have to write things down by hand or I never learn them. I've tried it with a laptop and it was a complete fail, plus lugging my laptop around was a pain. It also proved to be more of a distraction than anything else.

You don't need to cite studies to get me to believe that. I just do things better by writing down stuff. I do type very fast, but writing things down helps me remember it better.

Plus instead of typing every single thing the professor says, I can write down the main idea easier on pen and paper.

Another point no one added was that access to the internet would be a huge distraction for me. I'd be on facebook...here...AIM/MSN...Playing a stupid game...Taking notes...If I have pen and paper I'm less likely to get sidetracked.

I remember some guy was watching "Rocco's Modern Life" in front of me during class (big lecture hall). Very distracting.

Re: Taking Notes In College - January 28th 2010, 04:08 PM

Many people at the university I go to use laptops and pen-n-paper. I like to use pen and paper for a few reasons. First, I'm a pretty slow typer. If I type fast, then it tends to appear as gibberish with so many spelling and grammatical errors but not when I handwrite fast. Second, if the laptop freezes, then although a recovery file may be made, you'll miss lots of information. Third, in math/statistics and biology, it's a pain to use the computer to draw diagrams. Sometimes I see people draw by hand and type the notes but that usually is a hassle since the tablets to write on often aren't big enough for a laptop and notebook, at least not in a way that's comfortable. Fourth, many people who I see using laptops tend to go on MSN, forums, games, videos, etc..., and I don't want to be tempted especially in a class that's boring as hell. It gets distracting for others especially if the class is dull but what's on the computer screen is actually interesting.

I'm surprised that people are saying they don't learn when typing. Sure I learn perfectly well when writing, sure I write to learn and not to take notes - here's one example:
forums/f22-education-careers/att703-img_0109%5B1%5D-jpg
But I learn equally well from typing, it gets my mind working in the same way. the last long document I typed was a 6-page history essay which I know inside out, even the letter codes.

I always take notes with pen and paper.
It is faster and easier for diagrams in bio. I also find it impossible to do maths on a laptop.

Then when I get home I type them up as a form of revision because it means I am going over it again. Also I have to type them up because I can't revise from my hand written notes because my hand writing is terrible when I am rushing to take notes.

I'm currently in my second year of a BA (Hons) degree at University and have gone through four years of college. But not once have I seen somebody taking notes on a laptop of any description. So from what I've seen, people use good old-fashioned pen and paper, including myself.

Psych lectures, at least the ones I've gone to had a good amount of laptops. Math and some sciences don't as much because it can be a pain to write the forumlae on computers, especially when it involves integrals and such.

Honestly, it would depend on the class. I don;t own a laptop but if I did I would use it for history or classes that did not require graphs or symbols because my handwriting is horrible. I usually end up giving up on notes halfway through because I'll go back to look at the notes i have taken so far and just confuse myself even more xD

I tend to just use notes as scratch paper and work out problems at the same time as the teacher so that I can see each step for myself.

For the most part, my professors don't allow us to use our laptops while in class. However, if they do, I do use it for notes (as well as other things :P) sometimes.
I just find pen and paper easier. It's not quite as quick, but I can draw things, erase things, go back and elaborate in sections, etc. Once you learn short hand or a method of writing that you understand, hand writing is pretty damn easy.

Pen and paper...
Everyone that uses a laptop never takes notes, they just get distracted and do other things and the lecturers all know this, its always really obvious.
I think I would prefer to type it but because of these people it looks bad, Im sure theres other that genuinely do use it to make notes just not many.

Id like to add another one in here... Anyone use a dictaphone, or record using anything in fact?

Re: Taking Notes In College - January 30th 2010, 11:29 AM

It depends on the class -- if it's something that requires diagrams or lots of symbols, I will or course handwrite. But for the most part, especially if it's a class where the teacher lectures a lot I prefer to type my notes mainly because it's what I'm used to. It also makes things easier to focus on what the professor is actually saying because I don't have to look at my screen very often when I'm typing. It also is easier to organize things because I can keep notes from the entire class in the same document so if a teacher references something that he mentioned last week, I can scroll up and insert a few more notes under the same point. Plus, I tend to doodle too much with a pen in my hand -- ironically enough, the computer is less of a distraction.

I've seen a few people in my forensic psychology class who used tape recorders. The professors don't care, except for some of our guest lectures as the individuals were from or work with the FBI, RCMP and possibly do research, so they did not allow recording devices to be used. The girl who was using it got her tape recorder taken by the guest lecturer and he put it on the table at the front after extracting the tape, then at the end gave it back. He showed us case photos and described details of actual cases so he said he wasn't going to allow tape recorders or similar devices, only pen-and-paper or laptops.

There were a few classes I took a laptop to, but it was far too easy to get distracted with a laptop for me. I most often wrote everything down with pen and paper wether the prof was putting everything online or not. Writing things down helped me to stay focused (as long as I continued actually writing the notes and not doing other things) and also helped me to learn what I needed to.

Laptop is quicker but I seriously cannot be bothered carrying it round all day :P 25 min walk to the bus then a bus ride then a 10 min walk up a MASSIVE hill= not good for carrying it!! Pen and paper is better for drawing diagrams if you need to, also.

Pen and paper, I find I remember the material much better if I hand-write it.
