Applying to colleges - February 7th 2010, 08:27 PM

How many is too much? Thinking of applying to possibly 7 if I can, any thoughts on this or opinions? Should I use the same essay for every school? Anyone else done this?

Not sure what country your in? But I'm in the UK and we're told to apply to between 1-3 colleges. But obviously, I know things are different in America and other parts of the world.

However, I don't really see the problem with applying to 7 colleges. Lets say you did, and 5 accepted you - you still have a lot of choice of what college to go to :]

They generally say between 3 and 6 schools, but you can apply to as many as you want. I was lucky enough not to have to write admissions essays. You can really only use the same essay if the schools ask the same essay question, if it's something generic though I don't see why not. It's not like people at all the different schools are going to compare your work.

I was going to apply to 19 and I wasn't the only one to do so at my school. The economy is tough, the financial aid market is a bit of a gamble. You'd be better off applying to as many as you can without compromising quality because if you get a good deal, you can safe yourself a lot of money when results come around.

This is of course different in countries where good education tends to NOT cost upwards of 50k a year :/

7 is a pretty good number, keeps your options open yet doesn't overwhelm you.

As for the essay you probably won't be able to get away with sending the same essay to every school. Most of them have a essay specifically tailored to the school application. Keep this in mind when you're gauging apply time, give yourself enough time to write the essay.
