What am I gonna do?! - February 1st 2009, 02:15 PM

pfft, okay...so...
I'm in my final year of sixth form, all of my friends have decided to go to uni and I also decided it, but then I withdrew my application in Jan because I didn't think I was strong enough after my New Years Eve attempt...anyhoo, now I want to go to uni, but I have to wait a year before I can apply again, so I have a year, sorta like a 'gap year'.
I've tried to get a job for ages, but I'm not so lucky : [

Hey Laura,
What course are you hoping to do? You can still go to uni this september if you wanted to, because there is always clearing and there will probably be places left at various unis but does depend what course you are applying for. Or if you decide you do want to take a year out then finding a job at the moment will be really hard. But I guess you will have to keep looking.

Like Jen said... you could still apply now. Because the deadline has passed universities aren't obligated to look at your application, but depending on the course you want to apply for you may still have a good chance of securing offers. UCAS extra and clearing are also options to fall back on if you receive no offers for the unis you originally apply for.

If you really want to go to university this year, then I'd give applying late a shot. Apart from the application fee, what have you got to lose?

Waiting a year to go to uni may also turn out to be beneficial in the long run. You'll have the chance to gain more life experience and universities often look upon people who have taken gap years as perhaps being more focused on where they want to go and having developed an added level of responsibility. Additionally, during the year you might decide to change the course you're thinking of applying for in favour of another career path. So what may seem tlike a crappy situation initially can often turn out to actually be useful in the end.

Finding a job in the current economic climate might not be the easiest of tasks, but I'm sure if you keep looking and applying at different places then something will come up eventually. Alternatively, maybe if you have access to the funds or are able to secure a grant of some sort, going abroad to do some volunteer work or looking into some of the gap year companies out there might be a valuable experience. It'll add a nice touch to your UCAS application if you were to apply next year, too.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
