Exclamation Compare/Contrast Essay - March 30th 2010, 07:56 PM

I asked my teacher in an e-mail what the thesis sentence should be in a compare/contrast essay, and she said:

your thesis should focus on the elements you plan to compare about the 2 poems and a hint about the significance of the comparison."

What does she mean?

I responded to her e-mail and not sure if she'll respond by tonight (since the essay is due tomorrow I don't have all the time in the world) so I figured I'd get some responses in here. What do you think she means?

I'm doing a comparison between two poems.

Basically she's saying have your thesis summarize major points of what you're comparing about each poem and why these are important. I'd pick one or two major points that encompass your essay and go from there.

Write down the basic things you're going to compare, such as syntax, tone, etc... and without giving specific quotes of them, justify why you're using those particular elements as opposed to others, such as lexicon or rhyming scheme. Don't mention the details, such as comparing the tone and in poem A it's sad wheres in B it's happy. That's for your essay but for your thesis simply say why you're using tone or whatever the elements are that you're using (i.e. they're obvious, they have a strong impact on the meaning of the poem, etc...).

Makes sense.

This all goes down to the theme of man vs. nature. Should I put in my thesis that the theme of man vs. nature is what everything boils down to, or should I specifically say that nature always wins against man as the theme in the thesis sentence?
