Skipping a year of a foreign language - February 10th 2009, 01:53 AM

Right now I've taken two years of French and have gotton a B for a four semesters. Due to my schedule next year, it is impossible for me to take French, but I can take it my senior year(I'm a sophomore now).
Has anyone else ever skipped a year of a foreign language? How did it work for you? I plan on reviewing using Rosetta Stone.
Any tips?

In university I could but the two weren't strictly linked, the best idea would be to ask the head of department what your options are

It's definitely possible to not take a language for a year and then come back. Just MAKE SURE to review- Rosetta Stone sounds like a good idea. Also have (spoken) conversations in French.

I've never skipped a language, but I had a similar situation with Physics- I took Physics in 10th grade. I wanted to take AP Physics, but I had to take a year "off" from Physics because I had to finish Pre-Calculus (11th grade) before I could take AP Physics. Not a language, but it worked out fine for me, because I kept reviewing the material.

I skipped a year during my senior year. I had completed Spanish 4 in my junior year and my high school didn't offer Spanish 5. When I went back to Spanish in uni it was super hard! I had lost so much but it will eventually come back.

as long as you keep up on what you have already learned...i would think it should be fine

Most 4-year schools prefer you to take the same language for at least 3 years (e.g. freshmen, sophomore, and junior years). However, I am sure you can do that, but you would need to explain to whichever school you are applying why you didn't continue with French during your junior year. I am sure it will be fine.

I took French for three years. French three is important, trust me. I've heard Rosetta Stone is a wonderful program. If I could get my hands on a few, I would.

I miss French. J'ai Drole.
