Essay - help!! - June 21st 2010, 11:06 AM

Okay so I need to do a Pride and Prejudice essay in the next two weeks as coursework for English. So far in my coursework for English I have achieved four A*s and two As but now I'm really stuck. It's one of my last pieces as well. It's such a shame because I know Pride and Prejudice so well, I've read the book, and watched the version with Colin Firth loads of times. I know it inside out.
The essay is on the two rejected marriage proposals but I'm so stuck. Every time I try to write it, my mind goes blank and I just get really frustrated. Any ideas on how to write an essay effectively without getting all stressed and messing it up? I need to get good marks and I keep panicking. Please help x

Re: Essay - help!! - June 21st 2010, 04:48 PM

I really like Brittany's plan above.
I've always found that when writing essays, I need to think of a point that I'm trying to make within the essay and focus on that - rather than write about everything I know that happens in the novel.

Do you have an essay title to help you start - our English teacher always gave us a basis to work from?

My Favourite things to focus on would always be ;
- How the main characters decisions affected the audience
- Comparing men and women, and the roles of men and women
- Comparing status (Kinda links to the above)
- Comparing different relationships within the novel
- How are emotions presented, why do the characters feel those emotions.

I've always found that by focussing on a specific point I could could write about a little about a lot - if that makes sense. In English, its never how much you write, but what your trying to say and how you say it. Don't wonder off on tangents and start talking about why the characters dog is there - stick to your point !!

If your still stuck, try mind mapping.
And if your still still stuck, talk to your teacher - he/she is there to help you

I'm still alive.
Must have been a miracle
It's been one hell of a ride
Destination still unkown
It's a fact of life: If you make one wrong move with a gun to your head
You better walk the line or you'll be left for dead.

I'm a runaway train on a broken track
I'm the ticker on the bomb that you can't turn back
Thats right.
I got away with it all and I'm still alive.
Let the end of the world come tumbling down.
I'll be the last man standing on the ground
As long as hot blood runs through my veins
I'm still alive.

Oh oh oh I know that!
A mind map is a bit like a spider diagram except it's more extended, kind of like this

I only ever used them in home ec but as an example of that, in the middle I'd have Protein, leading off from that I'd have "Functions! and have a list of functions coming out from that box, then I'd make another box leading from Protein that said "Sources" so around that box I'd have different sources of Protein, if that makes sense.

What you could do is create a spider diagram with the ideas that were posted before and around each of these ideas you could have quotes from the text that relate to that specific area of the text.
Does that make sense? I'm not great at explaining things

Good luck with your essay though

I've never read the book, so you might have to change this a little. But, you say that your essay is on two rejected marriage proposals. So, try writing it in this sort of format:

Intro Paragraph: Background of Pride and Prejudice, then go on to say something about marriage proposals, especially related to the book, and then ask "but what are the reasons behind rejecting a marriage proposal?"

First Body Paragraph: The first proposal - why it happened, why it was rejected, the thoughts and feelings of everyone involved.

Second Body Paragraph: Same as the first, but with the second proposal.

Third Body Paragraph: Compare the two proposals, and say what you think accounted for the differences.

Conclusion: Talk about other reasons proposals could fail, and what reasons you could see for more failed proposals in this book specifically.

Hopefully that works for you Sometimes it's easier to know your topics for all the paragraphs before you begin, so that all you have to do is write around them.
