Working at petco or Pet Smart could be a good start. First of all make sure they are hiring then do the application online. Call in sometime during the week and ask them if the position was still available. If so let them know you are interested in the position. They'll give you an interview, you gotta job.

Like any other career profession you should work up from there, volunteer, go to school, and network. Being patient helps. Good luck.

A lot of zoo's hire young workers, and it would look great on a resume. Animal Hospitals and Kennels hire a lot of people for the everyday work with the animals as well. Or if you're just looking for the experience and not the cash, a lot of shelters or hospitals take volunteers.

Okay, well you said animal shelters and animal-type stores already - what about something that keeps animals, like a petting zoo, or even volunteering around your regular local zoo? Or maybe helping out with horses at the local stables or something. Obviously those depend on location, I realize not every place has them. You could also work as a petsitter, through a self-run business or with a group that offers petsitting in your area. I do petsitting as a second job and it's great, gives you a lot of experience caring for animals.
