TERRIFIED to start college - August 10th 2010, 01:47 AM

On august 29th, I will be moving in as a new freshman at University of Wisconsin River Falls. I'm in the animal science program. Starting in elementary school I had horrible anxiety and I hated school. I cried at school all the time and at one point my parents tried to have me enrolled in a special school for kids with emotional issues. Luckly my sophomore year in HS everything just went away and I did great. Good grades, happy, all that stuff. I have a morgan horse that I love to death and a lot of pets. Bottom line is, I'm extremely attached to my parents. We recently moved, so I've been spending even more time with them. I'm also very attatched with my pets and my horse. They are family to me and I'm so depressed about having to leave them. I will be about 40min away, but I won't be able to come home every weekend. Everytime I hear the word campus, or school, or college, I feel like a brick has been dropped in my stomach. I'm so scared I'll regress back to my high-anxiety, miserable school days. I've never been away from home for more than a week. What can I do to deal with this?

.....sorry I like wrote a novel...

Hey, I'm sorry that you feel this way. Have you tried seeing a therapist about this? He/she might help

That's a tough situation, leaving home is always really rough. I remember when it actually started to get close to when I was leaving for college I started freaking out too, about missing my mom and my dad and siblings, and while you'll still miss them, over time your campus will begin to feel like a home to you. I would suggest that for the first month or two you stay on campus though and fight the urge to go home because that is when everyone is making friends and bonding and you don't want to miss out on that, and that way when you do go home it will only be for a visit and you'll have something to go back to campus for. As to your horse, I was on the Equestrian Team my freshman year, maybe you could try doing that? Or volunteering at the local animal shelter? If you miss your animals. I know just going to visit my boyfriend's family and playing with his dog helped me with missing mine. Also as to your horse, have you looked into barns near campus? Maybe you could discuss with your parents moving your horse a little closer, so you would still be able to ride, giving you a little piece of home while still at college?

I hope this helps, and please know that while at first college can be scary and tough, it will get better, and it is such a great experience. -Megan
