Do I stay longer? - August 27th 2010, 11:39 PM

College is stressful, especially when my counsellor doesn't really know what I need to do (because she's really a professor who's been appointed students to advise). So as it turns out, I'm a couple credits short of where I need to be, which puts me at graduating at least a semester off schedule.

Now, I'm starting to accept that I'll not be graduating when I had originally planned. In fact, the only reason I wanted to do the traditional 4 years of college is so I had less loans to pay back (because I plan on being a teacher, and we all know how well they're paid). But I got to thinking about things even more this past week. If I stay and do a fifth year of college, I could do a double minor. I'm an English major with a teaching emphasis and a Spanish minor. But I've been taking a lot of creative writing classes as well. So I figured that if I stay for a full fifth year, I could also minor in creative writing. But, I also know that if I take a couple more credits, I can be out in the four years (the end of next school year) if I wanted.

I guess my question would be, is it prudent to stay and double minor? Does this sound like a good and logical plan, even if it means a couple more thousand dollars?

Being a 5 year student is very common. I am currently slated to be a five year student by way of adding a psychology minor. I also agree that many advisors are not very good at their post. In their defense the curriculum and the systems they have to use change very rapidly. Usually you're best off planning it yourself.

I believe that taking your time in college helps cut down on the level of stress as you do not need to jam-pack your schedule in. I did that earlier on in my career and that did not suit me well.

Additionally, every single academic experience is a chance to learn and to grow. A few thousand dollars in the long run will be far outweighed by the experiences it has to offer. You could also consider just taking the extra semester without taking the minor. 4.5 semesters are cheaper than 5.

For your future career it won't be necessary to have that double minor, surely. So I would work harder now by getting extra credits for the long term reward - less debt, and getting into your career earlier.

They just tell you four years... As posted above, five years Isn't that uncommon. I would stay and double major, be as well prepared as you can. You have your whole life, make it worth it girl.

Thanks for the advice you guys. I guess you're right...after so many years and the loans, what's one more year compared to better arming myself for the hard future ahead?

Brittany seems pleased with her answers, and they seem like the most logical ones too, so I'm going to go ahead and close this. Brittany, if you'd like it reopened, feel free to start another thread, or PM me or serendipity. and we will be more then happy to reopen it.
