Question Quick Application Essay ? - advice please! :l - September 1st 2010, 04:11 AM

I'm currently in the process of applying for colleges and I'm stuck on the "personal statement" essay. When it comes to these essays, should I go for personal, or should I go for general. These are the 2 topics I have to choose from:

- If admitted, you will join a diverse community of students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Please respond to the following hypothetical situation: In your first-semester English course you are assigned a group writing project to be completed within a week. In addition to yourself, your group is comprised of five other students, some of whom are from different countries and/or have different racial/ethnic backgrounds than you. Please explain how your past life experiences will help you effectively collaborate with your group members in order to achieve success on this project.

- If you feel that your high school record does not accurately represent your academic abilities, please explain why. Include and discuss particular extenuating circumstances that may have contributed to any scholastic challenges.

The thing is, I could write on the first topic, but it wouldn't be very personal. It would just be a fact based, simple statement. For the second option I have a lot I could say, but the thing is, I don't want to sound like I'm looking for pitty. It would be personal and have meaning for me, but I really don't want to make it sound like I'm making excuses for myself.

So could someone please help me out here- should I go for general or personal? I appreciate any advice(: Thankks
