Memorizing. - October 5th 2010, 02:04 AM

In reading class, I have to memorize the poem "The road not taken" by Robert frost.
I have til wednesday to memorize it. then i have to recite it.
My problem? I can't remember anything.
i just wrote ONE verse(only 5 lines), 30 times, in a row, and recited it out loud while doing so, and i remember nothing. if you asked me right now what it is, i don't remember. no clue. i just don't know what to do anymore.
any suggestions?

It depends on what is your learning style. I'm a Kinesthetic learner that means that I learn carrying out physical activities, rather than listening to a lecture. What I do when I have to memorize something is I read it aloud a couple of times then say it without looking at the paper, I also say it looking at myself in the mirror aloud it feels silly but it works.

First of all, I love that poem! Hands down, favorite poem of all time!
My suggestion would be to try to maybe put a little jingle to it, I find this helps me to remember things. Good luck!

When I needed to memorize lines for English I would move with the poem and recite it over and over again, adding rhythm and inflection to it, which helped me a lot. I have a friend who makes flash cards of each line and carries them around with her going over them whenever she has a spare moment.

Thanks guys for the ideas!
I think I realized that I'm definitly not a visual learner( like when you write it) and I think I have to hear it a lot. But I'm still unsure.
But thanks again ))

Re: Memorizing. - October 6th 2010, 04:33 AM

For memorizing poems in English, I would break the poem down into chunks and memorize each chunk perfectly. For example, if there are 4 paragraphs/stanzas, I would memorize each paragraph one by one perfectly, ignoring everything else. Then, I would try to recite to myself paragraphs 1 and 2, then 1, 2 and 3, then 1,2,3 and 4. Depending on your specific learning style, you can adopt this idea into it, such as writing out the same paragraph over and over, then writing out several of them together. It was also helpful to understand what each paragraph means and what the entire poem means because it is easier to memorize it as you already have a general idea of what the words would be.

Make a song out of it. That may help you.

Another vote for putting a song to it. Even if it's like twinkle twinkle or something basic, it's amazing how many song lyrics i know but how long it took me to recite my French A level stuff!

I hate subjects where you have to memorize stuff. I don't see how that shows any talent related to that subject at all.

We tend to remeber things because they have meaning behind it to them...

So create a story for your self in your mind when u recite it.

This poem... is about being yourself and non conforming to society.
