How do you study? - October 20th 2010, 01:04 AM

I am curious to see how different people study if they study at all.

How do you study?
Do you participate in groups, solo activities, or both?
How often and how long?
Do you think it is effective?
What kind of grades do you get? (granted, different scales exist)

I study by reading my notes and sometimes my book.
I participate in solo activities.
Maybe an hour to two hours over the entire week for all my subjects.
I think it is effective.
I get usually around 90%+. In the anatomy (a weed-out class for my school), I am get a 97%.

I think it is amusing because people tell students do not study how I study. I do have a high reading ability and I can recall the facts later on though so I am not just memorizing the context.

Re: How do you study? - October 20th 2010, 03:23 AM

1. How do you study?
I usually wait until the day before (which I know I shouldn't do - I have a full schedule, so it's hard to work everything in), but when I do study, it's effective. I turn on music/the TV just for background noise, and create a study guide. Powerpoints, notes from class, and my textbooks get highlighted like no tomorrow. I also write (pecil and paper) and never type. I tend to do a lot of talking to myself, and thinking aloud because it helps me talk through the information, which helps me process it.

2. Do you participate in groups, solo activities, or both?
Solo, for the most part. I don't like study groups as they can be confusing, and have never had a need for a tutor. Homework assignments and such, I can do in groups because it's good to get other ideas. When it comes to the test, though, I tend to fly solo and trust my own knowledge.

3. How often and how long?
The time really varies depending on the class. I've had classes that I never opened the book for and did fine, and in others, I can easily spend 6-8 hours studying for one test, sometimes more.

4. Do you think it is effective?
Yes, and my grades agree with me.

5. What kinds of grades do you get?
My current college GPA is a 3.637 on a 4.0 scale. I'd say I do pretty well.

Re: How do you study? - October 20th 2010, 03:50 AM

To study, usually I'll start by turning off the computer/tv/phone, and completely read my notes for the class from front to back without stopping. Once I've done that, I'll leave it for a short while, and either do work for another class, or get something to eat, etc. Then I'll read them once more. At that point, I'll make a list of themes that I noticed came up a lot over the duration of the course. I then start making notes on each theme, dividing it up into sections of the course - so if it's a literature course for example, I'll write a bit about each theme for each piece of literature we've read. I try to keep my notes down to about two pages, being concise as possible. Once I'm done that, I've got the important points in the course summarized down to two pages - which I can then easily memorize. I find it quite effective for me, and I tend to get pretty good grades.

How do you study?
From the notes I take in class and book.

Do you participate in groups, solo activities, or both?

I prefer to study in groups I feel that if I try to study alone I get distracted very easy and in groups everyone puts in all they know and we get more done.

How often and how long?

I don't study that often as I wish I did, but it also depends on the subject I can go from not studying at all for some to pulling an all-nighter for others.

Do you think it is effective?

Yes I think it's working for me.

What kind of grades do you get?

Last semester I had an 8.6 which is good for the first year in university.

Re: How do you study? - October 21st 2010, 05:08 PM

How do you study?

4-8 hours in the library each day reading around each lecture and covering material on the bibliography for each module as well as taking notes on books I'm reading in preparation for the prescribed essays. I take notes on everything I read, I type up my lecture notes and I add the notes to points from the lectures or make new points relating to that lecture's topic if necessary.

Do you participate in groups, solo activities, or both?

Solo.

How often and how long?

Everyday, 4 -8 hours, escept for saturdays where i might do two or three and sunday which is my day off.

Do you think it is effective?

It gets the grades, but with a BA its all about reading. read-read-read.

What kind of grades do you get?

A's and B's.

How do you study?
Generally reading the textbooks/notes/internet revision sites. Also, I like to play games and multiple choice quizzes.
Do you participate in groups, solo activities, or both?
I mainly do it by myself, I very rarely study with other people.
How often and how long?
Not as often as I should. But usually an hour a day per subject. And usually I do it more the closer I get to the exam.
Do you think it is effective?
It used to be effective until my Summer exams this year but I had other stuff going on so it could have been down to that rather than my studying technique.
What kind of grades do you get? (granted, different scales exist)
Uhh, B's and C's usually with the occassional A and the odd D.

I make notes, flashcards, voice recordings. I read the material out loud to myself, and usually get someone to ask. The time I spend completely depends on what I'm studying and how well I know the stuff from class. My grades are good.

How do you study?
I make very rough notes in class and neaten them up later on, boiling it down to a summary.

Solo or group?
Always solo. I get distracted too easily.

How often and how long?
Maximum of one hour at a time, with a break in between each session, up to nine hours a day if it's just before exams.

Do you think it is effective?
If I put my mind to it.

What kind of grades do you get?
A's and B's.

How do you study?
I copy notes two or three times - that's how I retain information best, by writing it until it sticks in my head. With vocab terms I'll make flashcards as well.

Do you participate in groups, solo activities, or both?
Usually solo except for midterms and finals.

How often and how long?
Depends on the class.. easier classes I won't study at all for.

Do you think it is effective?
Yup.

What kind of grades do you get?
A's and A-'s.

I mainly study on my own. I use a mix of past papers and I also like to make spider diagrams and revision posters to stick on my wall. If I dont study on my own I usually tend to study with someone who needs a lot of help and try to teach them the subject which helps me to learn it myself

How do you study?
I find that I study best off notes I have made in class - preferably hand-written. I kind of zone out if I'm reading typed up notes. Sometimes I read through textbooks and highlight relevant snippets of information though - yellow highlighter all the way, because it's been said to help you retain information . I find that doing practice/review questions if you're studying for something like math helps. But, yes, that's about it.
Do you participate in groups, solo activities, or both?
I just finished up with my final year of High School (still have a few finals left.. for which I should be studying now ) and everybody was really competitive about their marks and stuff. I don't care about being the best or top of the year, I just want to do well for me. And I tend to work better in groups because I get distracted when I'm alone. And since my ability to concentrate seems to have...dissipated and everybody's so busy, I've had to study alone. Group study sessions help though if you're one to get distracted. Not too-large groups though - that usually turns into a party
How often and how long?
I would say that at least 1-3 hours a day is beneficial - give yourself the weekend off or something. It all depends on your mood and whether or not you have an exam/quiz the next day. It varies with each person. I haven't been studying as much as I should have been... This year, assessments and assignments aside, I've been doing maybe 1-2 hours a week, tops. Every other week
Do you think it is effective?
It will be if you keep away from distractions i.e. computer, people you may start to talk to, cellphone, TV. And study at a desk with good lighting. Or anywhere.. that is not a bed.
What kind of grades do you get? (granted, different scales exist)
Haha... I used to get A's and sometimes B's. But now I've dropped down to B's and the occasional C I should have stuck to a study plan. No matter the circumstances.

Good luck studying, all! Find a study plan that works for you

How do you study?
I don't often study, but when I do it's usually just copying the information once or twice by writing. If I write or type anything I can remember it well enough for a test.

Do you participate in groups, solo activities, or both?
Only in my World Studies class (basically AP for freshmen without the college credit) do we study together. xD I usually study on my own.

How often and how long?
Mmmm... I'd say the usual is between ten minutes and an hour either the night before or day of the test. xD

Do you think it is effective?
Well, considering my grades, I'd say not usually.

What kind of grades do you get? (granted, different scales exist)
Like, around 95% correct usually. -.-' I should work harder to get 100%.

How Do You Study?
I just take notes and bring them home with me to study them, and by 'study' I mean looking over them enough times until I have what I need to know memorized. So yeah, nothing too complicated. I sometimes study on the bus to and from school also.

Do You Participate In Groups, Solo Activities Or Both?
Eh, just solo activities. I don't study with other people because that makes it harder for me to memorize things.

How Often And How Long?
I only study when there is a test less than one week away. I usually study for half an hour to one hour. It depends on how long it takes for me to memorize things.

Do You Think It Is Effective?
Yes, but only if you're willing to put some effort into it and pay attention. Otherwise you won't get anything out of it except for a bad grade.

What Kind Of Grades Do You Get?
Mostly A's or B's. Sometimes C's or D's. Hardly ever F's.

How do you study?
I read the material and my notes over and over again until I feel that I'm ready for an exam. I find that I remember material better when I write it down so I write down important things over and over again.

Do you participate in groups, solo activities, or both?
Just solo activities, I prefer studying as a solitary activity.

How often and how long?
Usually like the day or two before the exam for an hour or more each night Until I feel like I know it (so the time spent on studying varies)

Do you think it is effective?
Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. It really depends on the class I suppose.

What kind of grades do you get? (granted, different scales exist)
Usually As, Bs, Cs. Occasionally a D in math, considering I'm terrible at it.

You keep music, television, all distractions away and completely turned off until you crack down on all your books that you'll need to memorize.
You are done when you've put I say a good couple of hours or three into it, depending on how hard the test or work you do the next day is going to be, and how long it'll be, but it's best to study everything over and over you may need to memorize, write down important things until you've got it all perfectly memorized in your head.

How Do You Study?
I don't study much, well, I never study because I'm out of school, but when I was in High school, I just re-read things, and what I wasn't sure of, I would write down on a piece of paper, and study from that.

Do You Participate In Groups, Solo Activities Or Both?
Solo.. I can't study with people.

How Often And How Long?
I never studied for tests, I only studied for exams.

Do You Think It Is Effective?
Nope, because I was always stressed by exams, because I knew I had to get good marks.

What Kind Of Grades Do You Get?

How Do You Study?
I always study last minute. I'm a huge procrastinator, and for any quiz/midterm/exam i've always done the whole night before cramming thing. I usually look through my notes, and write out the most important bits of information out on another paper. Once i'm done that i'll re read it over and over again, and sometimes i'll either make up questions that I think may be on the exam, or get someone else to quiz me on the material.

Do You Participate In Groups, Solo Activities Or Both?
I can really only study alone. I'd be too distracted with other people, especially if they don't study the same way I do. The only time I ever like someone around when i'm studying is when I want to be quizzed.

How Often And How Long?
I start studying the night before an exam. Horrible, I know. I cram from maybe 5pm-12am.

Do You Think It Is Effective?
Well, it works for me. But it's a horrible way to study, I think. I wish I could start studying weeks or even days in advance but i'm just not interested in studying anymore than I need to.

What Kind Of Grades Do You Get?
Since i've been in college my exam marks are usually in the 80% range or higher. I can remember the content for about 24 hours after I learn it and then I forget it all.

Re: How do you study? - October 24th 2010, 11:07 AM

I'm the same with reading things and being able to remember them. I have only recently (like, the last 4 days) even began to study. In high school I never needed to, I was epic far ahead in primary school and remembered everything since they were such great teachers. So when I got to highschool, they barely taught me anything new.

Now I find I write practice answers, since we get an idea of what kind of questions we'll have ahead of time and they are usually essay questions of some sort. Not sure if it's helping, I've only had one exam to far and being Sociology, alot of the answers were common sense, haha.

Re: How do you study? - October 24th 2010, 08:24 PM

I study both from my notes and from the text book(s). I would absolutely love to do more group studying than I currently do, but being that I attend a university where we're all from different cities and work different hours at our part time jobs, it's difficult.

Sometimes I make flash cards and/or quiz sheets and text myself over and over again. The sheets are the same idea as the flash cards, with the questions down the left side and the answers down the right side, so I can fold over the answers and not see them. The benefit of the flash cards is that once I've really got something, I can take that card out of the pile and focus on the stuff I'm still not getting.

I also like to write "cheat sheets." The idea is to write down everything you know about the subject on a piece of paper, set it aside, and re-write it on a smaller paper, over and over until you can summarize everything on one side of an index card. You should be able to go from lengthy definitions to a single word or phrase. Of course, you don't actually use it as a cheat sheet during the exam, but the idea is that you've drilled the info into your head and won't need to.

When I'm studying something like psychology or history or sociology, if I find I'm running out of time I'll focus on memorizing definitions, names, dates, etc. Essay responses are awesome, because you can BS based on things like definitions. I seriously got a B+ in sociology without learning anything.

I usually get very high grades.

My biggest problem is when I read something that I don't understand. I feel like I've hit a wall, and I don't know how to scale it. I'm still working out what the best method of dealing with that is, but I'm getting much better. The key is usually to look outside the material I'm reading.

The walls are high, the walls are strong
I've been trapped in this castle that I built for far too long

Re: How do you study? - October 25th 2010, 10:13 PM

1. How do you study?
I usually study straight from the textbooks, if someone tries to give me something worded in a different way, I tend to get confused.
2. Do you participate in groups, solo activities, or both?
I like to do work solo more often than not. Groups are either awkward for me if I don't know the other person/people, or if I'm with friends we either don't get work done, or one or both of us gets upset because they each think the other one isn't doing enough work.
3. How often and how long?
I don't study that often, but I tend to remember things fairly well for a short time, so a once-over before a test is usually okay.
4. Do you think it is effective?
It works for me.
5. What kind of grades do you get? (granted, different scales exist)
Typically, my grades are around an 85/100 to a 95/100.

I usually use flash cards.
Or re write everything over and over again until it gets stuck in my brain.
Or repeat everything out loud.
Re read my notes.

Etc. It works well if i really put my mind to it. Otherwise, it fails if i'm not doing a good job.

How do you study?
It depends what I'm studying for. With French, I put vocab on flashcards and post it notes around my room and get my mum to test me on them regularly. For listening, I'll watch French TV programmes, etc. For other subjects, I try to go over the notes I've written, so I understand it better. Reading straight from a textbook never does anything for me.

Do you participate in groups, solo activities, or both?
I prefer to study alone, because I feel I get much more done that way, there's no distractions, etc. Though, I do think working in a group is helpful, too. Everyone helps each other and someone might have an idea that you never thought of.

How often and how long?
With French, nearly every day. With other subjects, several hours a week.

Do you think it is effective?
Yeah. French is my priority subject as I'm hoping to go a uni in France, so I need to be doing French often. Some subjects require more studying than others for me, but I do study for all of them.

What kind of grades do you get?
As and Bs in college.

How do you study?

I spend more time on the study guide then I actually study the material. Getting the right information down and breaking it down to something that I can understand helps me remember more efficiently and I spend less time studying altogether. So the key to my studying is having a good study guide. But I just read the study guide, rework problems, make sure I'm understanding what I wrote down, and just basic remembering. No flashcards or anything.

Do you participate in groups, solo activities, or both?

I go solo so I don't have to feel pressured to keep up and can take my sweet time.

How often and how long?

Whenever necessary. I don't reach above and beyond, I just do the bare minimal.

Do you think it is effective?

I could probably be more effective if I wanted to be, but I just choose not to.

What kind of grades do you get? (granted, different scales exist)

I usually get a 3.0 GPA. Maybe an A, but mostly B's. I'm in a Community College.

1. How do I study?- I review my notes at least 2 days prior to the test, 1 hr. per day. If its a quiz, 1 day before.
2. I normally study alone. As it is, both my parents are not great with language arts, science, or social studies, my mom does not understand my math homework, and both don't speak a word of Spanish.
3. I would say about 2 hrs. a day everyday except Friday, and 1/4 of it is just my required Spanish studying.
4. I would probably say yes because I get good grades.
5. Last term, I got a 4.0 GPA. So, definitely, that's really good!

It sometimes depends on the class, most of my professors post their power points online,so I just print them and study those, or in my other classes I just study my own notes. Most of my classes are what I call "cram and ace" for example, in my health class I went over all the power points once, the night before the test and ended up with a 90% on the test and I have a B in the class. I usually get B's and C's which I'm fine with very few A's. I could get A's if I tried harder, but I've never had straight A's or anything below a C in a college class.

How do you study?
I go upstairs and turn on the TV for background noise and get all my materials out. I study by writing down points on paper and memorizing and stuff like that.

Do you participate in groups, solo activities, or both?
I prefer to study alone.

How often and how long?
Almost every night for at least an hour and a half. For test, I study even longer.

Do you think it is effective?
Yes. I do well in school.

What kind of grades do you get?
As. I have ahd a B a couple times, but not often.

How do you study? Reading over the text, reviewing notes.
Do you participate in groups, solo activities, or both? I usually study alone, but sometimes I'll study with someone else if it's needed.
How often and how long? Every day or every other day. Anywhere from 5-45 minutes, depending on how much time I have and how well I already know the material.
Do you think it is effective? Yes. I score 5-10 points more on each test when I study, even if it's just five minutes of vocab review right before the test.
What kind of grades do you get? (granted, different scales exist) I have a 3.82 collective GPA (the past four years), and a 4.0 for last year and this year so far.

How do you study?
I look over past notes and assignements. I mostly look for stuff that I don't quite understand or have yet to memorize. I listen to music while I do this too haha.
Do you participate in groups, solo activities, or both?
I prefer to study alone. It's less distracting.
How often and how long?
Usually just before tests and for about 10 minutes.
Do you think it is effective?
Yeah, I always do better when I study.
What kind of grades do you get? (granted, different scales exist)
A's and B's. My GPA is usually around 3.5.
