Smile Ecology? - October 28th 2010, 08:41 AM

So I finally kinda figured out what I want to do and thats Ecology but I just wanted you guys' opinion on it, for those who don't know what that is:
I want to do Environmental Ecology and discovery of new places in the world ie field work and mostly with the environment and how the animals react to that environment and how the same animal reacts to this environment like which lives longer and all that good stuff but mostly just discovery of new places.
What do ya'll think?

I do think this it is a good thing to study, especially with all the ecology issues at the moment. I am not sure about the job opportunities at the end of it though so that maybe something to research.

I personally dislike ecology as a subject, the only biology exam I have ever failed in my A level biology was the one on Ecology because it bored me and I wasn't interested in it.

Thanks Rachel, that actually really helped me, only problem I don't know if I'm smart enough to be able to do it. English is my best subject, then comes science and the comes math, but then only reason why science isn't my best subject at the moment is because the science I was doing was inside the body (the worst kind of science there is) and so I was failing but now it's going back into land and animals and that was my best kind of subject before they changed it... so i don't know what kind of scores and stuff in those subjects I would need to get into a good college to provide me with the right education so I can get a good job... what do you think?

If you like ecology, then go for it! Personally, I like ecology over earth science, but that's my opinion.

Ecology is the only part of Biology I find easy and interesting! Definitely go for what you're interested in because then it won't seem so much like work.

At least at Michigan, ecology is a fairly hard major. You have to take a lot of prereqs, including an intro biology sequence (2-3 courses), four semesters of chemistry, a year of calc and a year of physics. The concentration is 30 credits on top of that. I'm a geology major and plan to declare an ecology minor, which is considerably easier than the concentration program. If you're interested in ecology, I'd definitely recommend speaking with a departmental advisor during your freshman year of college. Another solid option is to take the prereqs at a community college and transfer to a four-year school as a sophomore or junior. You'll save money and probably end up with a higher GPA.

I've only done one course in ecology and it was a second year university biology course. It was pretty easy but then again, the professor makes her courses fairly easy and exciting.

There is a program for it at my university and you do need to take various ecology courses but also need courses on plants, animals, fungi, evolution, some courses dealing with earth sciences, mathematics and some genetics. The courses on plants, animals, fungi, evolution and bacteria go in detail regarding anatomy and physiology. Some of them however are also geared toward ecology only but you need both.

I'm not attempting to discourage you but only letting you know that you cant avoid courses of inside the body, which you said you disliked as far as I can tell. Then again other universities may be different in this.

I can rip you off, and steal all your cash, suckerpunch you in the face, stand back and laugh. Leave you stranded as fast as a heart-attack.
