Overspending Pocketmoney... - November 6th 2010, 06:59 PM

It's getting ridiculous now. I get £5 a week, and it's EXTREMELY difficult not to spend more than my £20 a month.
It just seems like I don't get enough, and when I overspend it's because of that, and then when I ask for a pocketmoney raise, they say NO BECAUSE YOU OVERSPENT.

To put it in perspective, I buy lots and lots of music. Music is essentially my main outlet of money. But if I want to buy myself ONE album, that costs about £7. And that's almost half of my entire MONTH'S pocketmoney gone already, on one album! And at the same time, I can't live WITHOUT the music! So at the end of the month, I usually spend around £50. To me, that doesn't sound like a huge amount AT ALL awhen you think about what other people spend. I mean, if there's 12 months in a year, and Ive been alive for 14 years, if I can spend £50 a MONTH, it's not like I'm going to make my parents bankrupt. They're not exactly rich, but they're upper-middle-class.

I can't get a job, as I'm 14. Most places require you to be 16, and any others are either not local, or would require ridiculous waking-up times before my 8am school.

Anyone else got this problem, or know what I could do about it? I don't want to keep making my parents mad :|

I have a Thursday-evening paper round and it's a live saver - it pays about £30 a month. You should look into getting a paper-round ^^

Yeah, a paper round is a good idea when you're not old enough to work yet. You could do morning times, or evenings too. Walk peoples dogs in the neighbour hood, or wash cars also.

Other than that, you could maybe try to up your pocket money. Or just live with it until you're old enough to work.

You can also do chores around the house such as washing your parents car, cutting the lawn, fixing things around etc.

I have the exact same problem because I don't have a job, but I've managed to save up and it's reassuring to know I'm not going to get broke. Maybe you could borrow music from your friends, listen to it online, get the CDs for Christmas? Or like Andrea said you can offer to do the chores around the house for some extra cash.

Try and save a little bit now; you can still spend some of it later. Also, if you start saving, your parents might reconsider the issue with the pocket money raise.

I actually still deliver papers, its a great way to get exercise, and a great source of income, I deliver around 20 a day, and get $80. Also, its quick and easy to do them.

Can't you get spotify? I haven't had to buy any music in a very long time, pretty much everything is on there. Or other free music sites.

And ask for £5 cash each week. Once the money is gone it is gone. If you want to buy an album then you don't go to the cinema or something. It would be good to get used to living within a budget now -- rather than just increasing the budget -- because it's a good skill to have.

It's fine to have one.
It's fine to be proud of it.
But please don't whip it out in public and start waving it around.
And PLEASE don't try and shove it down my throat.

I just got Spotify Premium, so I'm now going to cut down on the music.

And yeah, that's what I'm going to do If I want two things, I'm going to choose one and not BOTH, even if I can get both. I want to be prepared for later in life

Little off topic, but I'm also going to try and learn more life skills. Eg. a few cooking skills, basic cleaning skills and how money/bills etc. fully work.

Maybe you could start like a pet walking thing as well, or shovel driveways or mow lawns. great money makers.
