what career choices do I have> - November 11th 2010, 03:06 PM

I was told I can't be with the public by vocational rehabitation because my IQ is too low (I'm in the 80's border line retarded they said), I'm not fully mentally stable (again what they said), and from therapists I need to have a job where I'm basically watched like a hawk because I screw up too easy. Is there really a job for me out there? I don't want to be on social security.

There is definitely a job out there for you. Anyone is capable of having a job, no matter what your 'disability' is. Maybe you should try and find someone who could help you find the right job for you. I don't know what services they have where you live, but there should be someone whom you could speak to who could help you.

I hope things work out, take care!

I tried vocational (job) rehab and they told me that there wasn't really anything out there for me. I wanted to work with children but I don't know if that's even going to be a reality

I truly believe that you can do whatever you desire if you are willing to work for it. It's hard to see sometimes, especially when society is telling you you can't, but you never know. There are a lot of public organizations that will help you find jobs.

Perhaps you can visit with another therapist or look into more vocational rehab. It sounds like you may have been talking to some close minded people.

Wishing you the best!

I've seen people who were mentally retarded work with children, work in stores and elsewhere. As long as you're not a harm to yourself or others, and have no criminal history or other legal issues, it shouldn't be a problem. I see people at university who are so mentally retarded, they have the mind of about a 4-5 year old. They still can participate in groups, have specialized courses for them, etc... . Obviously you're not that mentally retarded so you should do some looking around. If your therapist is telling you that you're too stupid to be unsupervised for even a bit and you're not liking that and any other things, consider finding another therapist.

I can rip you off, and steal all your cash, suckerpunch you in the face, stand back and laugh. Leave you stranded as fast as a heart-attack.
