Stuck in Chemistry - January 4th 2011, 11:55 AM

We are doing elements and valencies in chemistry. The teacher told us we have to learn the valencies of the first twenty elements by heart.

How am I gonna do that?!?!?

That's a little bit of a pointless memorization activity.

I'm not sure what you mean by "valencies". Can you tell me what your teacher gave you as a definition of "valencies"?

In any case, I'd start by memorizing the first twenty elements in order. And that I know you can do.

"Want to know a secret?

You are beautiful.

Black, white, gay, straight, bisexual. Whether you are smart or quiet or impossibly in love with your best friend, someone out there cherishes your smile and gets butterflies when you walk into a room.

Someone out there can't stop thinking about you. You Are Beautiful. Don't ever believe differently."

Valency is basically the number of bonds that can potentially be formed by an atom of an element.

I think you'll need to learn the first 20 elements to start with, and once you've got that add the numbers to it.

I find it the easiest way to rote learn facts like this is using mnemonics, so you make a rhyme or story to remember the elements.

I can't think of any for the first 20 off the top of my head but I have lonnggg train journey tomorrow so I might give it a go for you

But as an example, I have to remember the layers of the skin which are:

- corneum
- lucidium
- granulosum
- spinosum
- basale

And to remember this I use "Cher Likes Getting Some Botox".

Hope that helps

And PLEASE don't try and shove it down my throat.
