How can I get into journalism? - January 27th 2011, 01:46 PM

Hi. It's not so much of a problem but I am keen on journalism and would like to get a job in it when I'm older. I was just wondering if there's anything that I can do to increase my chances of getting a job in that area? Thanks .

Go to college and study journalism, if there isn't a course, try and find something that is close enough to it. Consider writing to the local papers as well, letting them know you want a career in journalism and they might be able to give you some tips or even offer you a job or something even if it is a pretty rubbish job, it gets your foot in the door.

write a blog and your done...

but journalism is a dying profession. Cuz of technology is killing tv, newspaper, radio stations, magazines and ect... And there is too many people who want to be a jounalist.

Because of the two problems stated above. it greatly impacts(negatively) your possible income in this professon.

so basically. you will have to work hard get a degree. then market your self like crazy for the job, while battling other potential jounalists... and then once you spends years trying to get it you will get paid a little.

Also people in this industry tend to favor "attracive people only" because its about being presentable as well. For interviews and ect..

ITs definiely not an easy career path.

I know a very very attractive girl who went to a local university for her first degree then went to the UK and she got a masters degree from Oxford University so she can be a assistant at a big magazine... ... I think she works for Vouge now...

Your best bet is to attend university and study journalism, writing, perhaps some politics, etc... . Also, do some writing to build a portfolio before you're in university as well as during and after. The majority of journalism is now online so you need excellent ideas, great writing styles, access to resources before other journalists, etc... . You may want to also focus on particular areas but one huge area people for whatever reason are interested in are celebrities and movies. Crime is also a very popular topic and beyond those two, topics are not as appealing to general society but to specific groups interested in that topic.

I can rip you off, and steal all your cash, suckerpunch you in the face, stand back and laugh. Leave you stranded as fast as a heart-attack.

I worked at a newspaper of work experience in high school, and got offered to come back after it was done.

Build up a portfolio of your writing, maybe try some freelance work. Go after your own articles and offer them to papers.

When you can't run, you crawl, and when you can't crawl anymore, you find someone to carry you.

Forget qualifications. A degree in journalism means you're good at that educational course, it doesn't mean you can write for a certain publication. I'm studying jounalism at college right now and I'm slowly learning that.

Write articles and send them in to papers, publications, blogs, anything. Get exposure, work freelance. Any jobs you see, apply and show them your portfolio. Keep writing, fine tune it, and do it regularly. Have an opinion on everything, look at things from different angles, prepare to support something you don't agree with for the sake of a wage, get a lot of contacts, find exclusives.

IMO your better off getting a respected degree.

Like a engineering degree, a ph.d, medical degree, or a high end business degree like a mba or even a phd. Then study your field, be an expert and then write stores.

Be great at somthing then talk/write about it.
