Post A*? - January 27th 2011, 09:01 PM

In english at the moment, i'm working at an A grade, and have been for a while. i mean, an A isnt bad at all, it's safe to say i'm one of the top in my class...but my teacher and i want me to push that upto an A*. my problem with that is vocabulary. in my coursework and exams i repeat myself alot because i dont know other words to go in place of those i write down. coursework there are ways around this, obviously use a thesaurus, but in an exam i cant, so i need some advice on how to expand my vocab in time for my GCSEs in june and july. i'd love to get an A* in english, i love to write

I think you should read some literature and books, they tend to expand your vocabulary over time. You should also make a list of the most common words you use that you end up repeating a lot and make a list of words using a thesaurus and other literary works and learn those so you stop repeating them

Write practice essays and use a thesaurus, by looking up and using other words you'll expand your vocab. Also as above said, read books!

The only thing is practice.
Fine the words you use to much and pick a few different words for it from a thesaurus then write them all down and test yourself on them and their spelling until you have them down.

Also your teacher should be helping you and should know how to help you better.

You can use a thesaurus during coursework like you said so if you do that and get your coursework up to an A* then that will pull your overall grade up and give you a better chance of getting that A*

It shouldn't though be just an issue of you having a limited vocabulary because you could be able to explain things in different, more elaborate ways. Once you get a bigger vocabulary, you have more items to use but you still have to be able to connect them coherently and for English classes, elaboration without tangents are desired. I don't study English but this could apply for your classes as well. After the biology and neuroscience lectures I go to or any seminars, I go home and I tell my parents about my day. Part of that involves telling them what I learned and since they don't study in that same field as I do, it's useless for me to start throwing jargon around without defining it. Instead, it's better to explain the things in different words using words that are more commonly known.

For example, suppose you know nothing about marine biology and I start telling them about some of what we did in the invertebrate biology lab, using the exact words of mesoglea and subumbrellular myoepithelium of jellyfish and how that can be analogous to the muscular hydrostat of squids. You'd look at me with glazed over eyes not understanding a word I said, so it's necessary I explain what I said in more commonly used words. This not only benefits you but also me because it makes the information more ingrained when I think of it in different ways and I can keep explaining the same thing using different sentences and wording.

So having a large vocabulary is great but you need to be able to explain things in different ways that make sense.

I can rip you off, and steal all your cash, suckerpunch you in the face, stand back and laugh. Leave you stranded as fast as a heart-attack.
