Club leader? - January 9th 2009, 11:17 AM

I've been the President of a club since school started in September, and for the most part things have run well. However, this month I've reached a snag. I have a LOT going on in my life right now and my attention is demanded by many people and things. I've never been very good at delegating responsibility, partly because I don't ask for help, and I also don't trust that people will get things done. I'm often with people who slack on things and in order to save myself I take on the majority of work.

I'm wondering if there are any other people who are leaders of clubs here, and if they can give me some tips? I want some help on setting goals and motivating others.

I'd sing you a song, but I'm feeling quite off
in my heart; it's occupied,

and now's not the time.

Re: Club leader? - January 9th 2009, 03:11 PM

I'm Vice President of Junior Class (woop, woop) (: andd I ran the whole of student council in middleschool for a year.

Just be ridiculously organized. That's how I survived when I was into it all.
I actually typed up agendas for each meeting, had clear objectives, and set up a seperate time to brainstorm for said objectives to be accomplished.

In order to be taken seriously, take all of the work seriously. Once people see you know what to do, they'll feel more into it.

Type up agendas, objectives, future plans/ideas...be open and always present ideas to the group.

Also, have a good contact and be available through IM, Facebook/MySpace, cellphone (calling AND texting) in case anybody needs to get to you. Set up seperate "business" accounts, if it helps (that's what I did).

By being organized, you can hold people accountable and thus, get work done. You can even make work intrinsic to the group so that they will sort of hound each other to get each section done so they can move on with their portion...if you know what I mean. But don't act that way. It'll come off as kinda snobbish (but I know what you mean - I used to want to do all of the work by myself - but...Just. Let. Go.)

E.g.
Fun acct: flipflopgrl24
Business acct: onn92 (something easy to remember, like first name, last name, class year, or whatnot...an easy pattern)

PM if you have any other questions? (:

Already done all that. We just don't do the brain storming. But usually after the officer's meeting I usually go type up the agenda and make several copies of it, and I even make a highly detailed one of who says what in the agenda (the Vice Pres. began taking over the meetings by talking too much and I was "uh this is MY meeting, bitch.") So the Agenda is already taken care of. The secretary goes over the minutes etc etc.

But as it turns out I didn't have much to worry about. The Vice Pres and the advisor have informed me that their fundraising project will be ready by next week. Sooo... yay deadlines.

Talk with the fellow officers...I mean, are they mature or like...unbearable? The people I work with are near unbearable (shows how tolerant I am, heh)...but ya. (:

Well, you know that my secretary is Mr. Cat Eye Contacts, and he's taken to poking/hugging/teasing me and I'm like WTF?! The Vice President is mature and a nice guy, we went to Kansas City together. I'm just afraid that he won't get stuff done, but the more I talk with him the better I feel. The treasurer is okay. He stays on top of things and takes his job very seriously. However, he's completely socially awkward. And I don't like awkward. All in all, it's a pretty good bunch, we get things done for the most part. I'm just hard on myself. >_<
