Acceptance/Rejection Thread (2011) - March 7th 2011, 06:26 PM

Ever logged on to a forum focusing on college admissions, interviews, etc. only to be shot down by fellow applicants and/or students? The reason why I love TeenHelp is because we're all so supportive of one another! =) So feel free to post your acceptance/rejection notices here. Whether the news is good or bad, know that you will have a loving online community to support you throughout the entire process!

---

I guess I'll go first. I am currently applying to PsyD (doctorate) and MFT (masters) programs in clinical psychology. So far, I have been rejected by the University of Denver and George Washington University. I have been interviewed for Pacific University and Spalding University, and should hear back from them within 2-3 weeks. I also have an interview with California State University in Northridge on Thursday.

Good luck I'm applying to universities as a prospective undergraduate. So far I've been accepted to UC Irvine and selected as a Regents' Scholar there, and I've done college interviews for MIT, Yale, Princeton, and UPenn. My MIT decision will be released exactly one week from now, so I'm really excited about it right now lol.

I have already posted in the UK thread but I thought I would join this thread too. We can only apply to 5 Uni's.

I have applied for Diagnostic Radiography.

So far I have offers from University of Liverpool and University of Cumbria.
I have been rejected from the Cardiff University.
I am still waiting to hear from University of Derby.

I also have an offer for a foundation year in the Bradford University but I really don't want to go there and I don't need to now as it was a back up foundation course and I have 2 offers now

So far I've been accepted to Baylor University, Hendrix College, Austin College, and am awaiting a response from Trinity University. So far I'm considering going for an MD in psychology and am hopefully able to use that for a career in either Psychiatry or a director (this is my less realistic dream)

Ooh, congrats! I am at one of the other UC's, and Irvine was one of my backups. I have a friend at this university who is a Regents' Scholar... being able to pick your classes before everyone else is veeeery nice. =P Good luck with all your other apps!

You can only apply to five universities?! That's insane. D= I mean, I only ended up applying to four doctorate programs... but I would still hate to have a cap on universities I could apply to. Congrats on getting accepted to two of your choices!

Just to clarify... undergrad, right? Baylor University has one of the best PsyD programs in the nation. =O Would have applied there if I had been competitive enough (I think they only take 6 students per year, or something like that). Congrats, and good luck in pursuing your career as a psychiatrist and/or director!

We don't get an offer until about a month before university starts. Our results come out in mid August, we get offers the week after, and uni starts in September. You can only get one offer though.

We apply in order of preference. If we get the points for our first choice, we're offered it, if not, it goes down the list. I've applied to, in order of perference:

University of Limerick: Languages, Literature and Film
University of Limerick: New Media and English
University of Limerick: Journalism and New Media
University of Limerick: Joint Honours (English & Spanish)
University of Limerick: Business Studies with Japanese
University College Dublin: English and Linguistics.

Hopefully I'll get my first choice though.

Thanks. I'm not getting too excited yet. I had offers last year but didn't get the grades I needed and had to retake the year. I am not getting my hopes up yet this year because I know I could still not get in.

I have been accepted to peace college and am going to be in the undergraduate program. I am planning on majoring in psychology and leadership studies. Then going to (the plan at least) duke divinity school to become a youth minister.

Er, yeah. At the time I responded I was kinda just thinking in terms of like a final goal and those are my two (as insanely difficult as they are, haha).
Anyways, thank you very much, friend

Thanks, guys! <333

Also heard back from Spalding University (the other doctorate program) this morning, and they're offering admission as well! I'll probably pick Pacific University, based on location and a few other factors (internship placement, scores on licensing exams after graduation, etc.).

I have conditional offers from the University of Birmingham, the University of Gloucestershire and Aberystwyth University. I'm waiting for the results of a scholarship for Aberystwyth, which would give me an unconditional offer.

Just posting again to say that I was rejected from MIT. No worries though -- I'm not really emotionally attached to any of the schools I applied to, so I don't really have a "dream school" so to speak. Now I'm counting down to the day when I'll get my decision from UC Berkeley!

Haha, glad to hear you didn't burst into tears like my ex-boyfriend's best friend did when he was rejected by MIT. Then again, both of his parents went to MIT... so I imagine it was a huge blow when they didn't accept him.

His parents went to MIT and they didn't accept him?? Wow. Top school admissions are so random these days -- it's almost like firing a shot in the dark since you have absolutely NO idea what they want from their applicants!

The thing I find most ironic about this whole process, though, is that my parents are stressing out about it WAY more than I am. My dad was disappointed when he heard I didn't get in. Poor dad. >:

Re: Acceptance/Rejection Thread (2011) - March 15th 2011, 06:47 PM

I hate the undergraduate admissions process. In 2006-2007, UCLA used a "holistic" approach for accepting applicants. I found out that a girl with a 3.0 GPA (NO AP/honors courses), who participated in NO extracurricular activities, was accepted to the university based on her personal statements and intended major alone (apparently, it was a very unusual major). Now, I may just be "one of those bitter UC students who didn't get into UCLA", but that seems so incredibly wrong to me. So some years (at least with the UC system), universities will focus almost entirely on your GPA and test scores, or they'll place equal emphasis on all the elements on your application, or they'll go way outside of the box to make their student body more "well-rounded".

I can only imagine the same thing happens with the other university systems at times. =P Then again... that man's parents attended MIT as engineering majors, and he changed his mind at the last minute to apply for the visual arts/computer media department. Needless to say, THAT probably affected his acceptance more than anything else. I mean, who goes to MIT for visual arts? =/

And I know all too well how stressful the admissions process is for parents. Partly because they're going to pay for many of your expenses, and partly because they want you to be set up for success. So it's both a financial and emotional investment. They want to have as many options as possible to consider, just as you do... cost, location, quality of education, career opportunities, etc. (Keep in mind that your parents aren't constantly talking to fellow students/teachers/counselors/admissions staff members, too... so while YOU may be well-informed about the overall process, and therefore less stressed out, your PARENTS may be freaking out because they are in the same position as a high school freshman - no clue on where to start or even what to ask/look for).

I totally agree with everything you said regarding the role of parents in the admissions process! Those two specific cases of students you mentioned were intriguing as well. It really makes me tempted to sign up to work as an intern in the admissions office of whichever college I'll be attending, just so I can see what exactly goes on behind those closed doors...

Also, since I noticed that everyone else already posted the application statuses (stati?) of all their schools, I should do the same:

Accepted: UCLA, UC Irvine (Regents)
Denied: Stanford (Early Action), MIT
Waiting On: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, UPenn, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, Boston College, University of Toronto

I have quite a long college list. :P

It works differently in ireland. We study intensive courses for 2 years at least 7 subjects and get points for our best six. all based on a final exam with practical/oral. My course is a sure thing it's only 360ish points because you need honours maths. So

Waiting on my transfer decision from UC Merced to UC Berkeley. I was at Merced on a transfer contract though, so it should be guaranteed. You never know though. I have to wait until the end of April. @_@

Good luck to everyone hearing back from their schools soon!

I'm expecting to get more admissions updates over the next week or so, but I'm just going to go ahead and say I was accepted to UCSD! I got into Thurgood Marshall College, which according to my UC application was my first-choice college (though I honestly had no idea what the difference was between each college lol).

Congrats, Ada! =D

Freakshow, I applied to UCSD. The difference between the six colleges is basically what you have for G.E. requirements and where you live on campus.

Congrats everyone! =] <3

Future computer/electrical engineering undergrad. Or a mathematics/physics double major depending on how engineering works out for me.

I got accepted into NYU-Poly, Boston University and Northeastern.
Still waiting for Columbia.
Rejected by MIT.

Yup, there's no limit in the United States. You can apply to as many schools as you can afford (application fees can be rather pricey [$50+], so that's usually why students will limit themselves).

---

I have a little update of my own! So as I've previously mentioned, I have two PsyD offers to consider (Pacific University in Oregon, and Spalding University in Kentucky). I now have a third option, however - Pepperdine University's masters program. The nice thing about Pepperdine is that I could stay in California, and it would only take half the time to complete my degree (which means less tuition, which means not having to go into debt/take out student loans!). The not-so-nice thing about Pepperdine is that it's not a doctorate degree, and I'd be living in a highly saturated area (lots of therapists in the Los Angeles area), so my pay would be lower and decent jobs would be harder to find. I have to make a decision by April 15, so I'll keep you guys posted!

Wow, we pay £21 and that covers all 5...
Suppose there are positives and negatives for both systems.

I am still waiting to hear back from my last uni. I should know by Thursday...
