College Applications. - August 20th 2011, 04:23 AM

I'm going into my senior year of high school, which means it's time to start applying to colleges. I have a 3.5 GPA, so I know my chances of getting into a top school aren't great. But there's a long list of schools that I know I could definitely get into. I can't apply to all of them because it would be way too expensive. If you're already in college, how did you narrow down the list of schools that you wanted to apply to? If you're in the same place as me, how are you planning on narrowing down the list? HELP PLEASE!! I'm already turning into a walking ball of stress.

Decide what you want out of a college. Do you want a school that's real focused on athletics or more academic? Are there certain activities you want to get involved in, if so, which schools offer them? Also, look at the student life on campus and the area surrounding the school to see what it offers. If you find yourself looking at a school and going "I could settle for that, it's OK", take it off the list.

When I applied, I used pretty much what Steph said, then narrowed it. For example, I looked at which universities were closest so I could save money by just commuting from home as opposed to living away from home. I also looked through MacLean's magazine (Canadian only I believe but there probably are American equivalents) and it rated each university along 20+ factors, such as how current students liked the courses, the campus, the profs, etc... . I later went to each university on my list to get a first-hand experience of the campus and dorms. Needless to say, visiting the campuses turned me off from a few universities. I also considered general reputation.

I can rip you off, and steal all your cash, suckerpunch you in the face, stand back and laugh. Leave you stranded as fast as a heart-attack.

Thanks guys!! I wish visiting universities was an option for me, but it's not. I don't have a license and my dad had a stroke a year ago, so my mom can't bring him on long trips like that. But the rest of the advice you gave me is something I'm DEFINITELY gonna take into account!
