Why are jobs in the sex industry such a taboo subject? - September 28th 2011, 02:03 AM

Why is it that no [or very, very few girls] will ever admit or say that they want a job as a stripper? Or a porn star? They're just jobs, like any other, and if you do them right, you can be paid a lot more then a college education job.

I think it's just because sex itself is a taboo subject, and therefore so are jobs related to it.

It really depends on where you're from. I've been to Amsterdam and as you may know, they have a very lucrative sex industry. There are reformed prostitutes that act as tour guides and may speak of their experiences.

Our society isn't as liberal as it possibly could be due to our roots in Christianity I believe. Religion has shaped the way people think for ages now. As much as we'd like to say that we're tolerant and accepting of all sorts of lifestyles, we aren't the most progressive in that area.

I would agree with this, and clarify (and reiterate) my first response to say that sex and the sex industry is taboo because of the way main-stream religions view sex (Christianity, Judaism, Islam).

Also, a lot of prostitution is forced, and the women are doing it against their will. Some of it is choice, but a lot of it isn't, so it's not usually something in a positive light.

Just to add to this, a lot of women are prostitutes or strippers to feed their drug habits as well. You don't often see young girls (or men) graduating and saying "Yeah, I think I'm going to be a stripper!" It's not anything you need any education for or even a talent. Everyone can get naked.

"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it.
I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote,
“Dear Jim: I loved your card.”
Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.”
That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything.
He saw it, he loved it, he ate it."
