Skills for life or Re-do GCSE's ? -
November 27th 2011, 01:35 PM
Ok. I am seriously considering going back to college to do maths and english, I can either do skills for life which is basic maths and english, or I can hopefully do Maths GCSE and English GCSE. Both courses are going to be free due to me being on welfare /Job seekers allowance money, but what I'm wondering is which course would be better ? If I do GCSE I Know the amount of work I have to do etc to pass, Where as with the skills for life course all I know is that it does math and english and they will suit it to my needs. I know most of you will say ask the college and they will tell you, I plan to ask the college but what I'm wondering is this ? Has anyone done the skills for life course is it like GCSE or would I be better off just going to do GCSE courses if it's possible for me to do so ?

Hey.
I've been in this situation. I mean, I got my english GCSE language and lit but I also got my key skills in it. However, I didn't pass my Math GCSE an I also failed the key skills for it. To do my degree I need to have a GCSE math or equivilen so this yeah I am re-taking the GCSE. I was going to do the key skills for it but I don't know, it just seems better to have a GCSE, I don't know why But do with what you feel more comfortable. If what you want to do after college requires just the key skills then you can do that, but make sure that's all you need. I know some of the universities I looked in to only accepted the Math GCSE and not the key skills.Jessie ![]() Three little birds sat on my window, and they told me I don't need to worry. Hi Lydia,
I agree with Jessie... it depends on what you want to do with your qualifications. Is it so you can go to uni? Or just something you want to do? If it's for uni then definitely look at the uni courses to check what they ask for, a lot of courses ask for GCSE maths at least a C grade. On the other hand, if you just want to go back to achieve a qualification in them for your CV then just look at the course specifications (usually the college will have these on their website) and see which sounds best for you. Hope this helps! x |

It's just so I can get a job . Because most jobs I want to apply for need a C in English and a C in math, I have D for english and F for math, so it's really just so I can get a job.

Hey
Well Im not too sure what skills for life is to be honest. Maybe GCSE would be best as it is the most recognised one? That sounds like the qualification your jobs are asking for anyway
