Has this happened to anyone else? - December 1st 2011, 10:05 PM

My grade is really bad in an honors math class that I am in. My teacher made me feel horrible about my grade and how bad I have been doing, and didn't even ask me why it's slipped so much. She told me I'm doing horrible and she wants me to drop the class. Then she called my mom and was perfectly nice to her. Can anyone relate?

Yes. I grew up in London, so obviously learned British English. I moved to the US before my Sophomore year and my English teacher was well aware. She was very unforgiving of my spelling and failed me whenever I used the British spellings. She was a total bitch to me about it and all nice and understanding when my dad talked to her about it. Fun times. So glad high school is over.

Can you sign up for tutoring? Maybe that will help if she will not.

Wow. Sounds like the same kind of teacher. Our school doesn't do tutoring. I either have to bring up my grade without her, or switch. Lovely.

I can definitely relate to that. I was in Algebra I in the 8th grade, which was an advanced class. While she didn't threaten to switch me, she made it known how poorly I was doing and forced me to stay after or miss out on some of the fun activities that my school was doing to redo tests or get help. I only got an 80 or an 81 in the class because I retook almost every test and quiz I took. I was pretty much to the point of tears on a lot of days in her class, and I was so irritable and upset with it. Then, at the end of the year she told me that I would have to repeat Algebra I in my freshman year of high school. Me, being me, got so offended by that, and when I had an opportunity on the first day of my freshman year of high school to get placed into Algebra II I took it and got an A, and this year is my sophomore year and I'm not doing as well as I'd like again. My 8th grade Algebra I teacher was supposed to have a plan set up with me that apparently my vice principal told her about, but she never went through with it. So, I can definitely relate.

That sounds SO much like me! I took Algebra 1 as an advanced class in 8th, and I'm a sophomore now. Here's to hoping we can do better this year!

When I was in 8th grade my math teacher was like this. I was in regular level math and nobody understood it so she kind of assumed we were all stupid and then I almost failed because she kept losing everyone's homework. A few years later parents complined and she quit/was fired

Then in 9th grade my keyboarding teacher was just plain mean, I was failing while everyone else had A's and I was the only one who got yelled at in front of people when I wasn't the only one doing something wrong. Then she would pull me aside and yell at me some more and make everything worse. (I think it was because I was depressed, go figure)

Dez *highfive*
Kate* Yeah, I've had that kind of teacher. And my teacher today decided to yell at me too, instead of asking why which would have led to the same conclusion you made about yourself.

Throughout elementary school I was rather skinny and short, which amused one teacher so she would always comment I was a chicken and in front of other students, say they should be gentle as they could break me. She administered reading/writing tests every year and when it was my turn, she would laugh and say how I would fail before I even started. Turns out, I got the highest score despite staying with my grandmother who couldn't speak much English, while my parents were off on business trips for days to months on end. I used her mockery as motivation but after seeing I got the highest scores, she shut her mouth.

Later on, in grade 8 the city decided to do construction along several roads near our house, especially in the morning. This meant I was showing up late to school, even if I left 20 minutes early. I told this to all my teachers and they were sympathetic because I got my homework and assignments done on time, just came a bit late to class but my homeroom teacher was very bitchy about even being a few minutes late to class, despite the fact she was always 5-8 minutes late (hypocrisy and irony weren't in her dictionaries apparently).

One day she pulled me out of class getting real bitchy and started shaking my arm, demanding to know the truth as though I was being interrogated. I told her the same thing yet she didn't believe me and started yelling at me, then threatened that I wouldn't pass the grade (despite having the highest marks) and issued several racial comments regarding my family and I. She mocked because I didn't say anything, although I was biting my tongue so I wouldn't have a go at her but she kept going to the point where other teachers stepped outside to see what was going on. After shaking my arm some more and yelling, I lost my temper, I grabbed her arm and issued several threats of my own (not going to repeat here) and ended along the lines of, "if you do this one more fucking time I'll hunt you down, now get the fuck back in the classroom and pretend to do your menial-paying job bitch" ... wasn't a bright idea but oh well.

Oddly enough, when she contacted my parents, she simply said I'm showing up a few minutes late to class but she understands why and is sympathetic, although could my parents speak to me about making my notes a bit more organized. Yeah, unorganized notes lol.

I forgot about my 3rd grade teacher and most of my gym teachers who picked on me and humiliated me so bad that I STILL have trouble trusting that adults/authority figures won't randomly go off on me for no reason, or for things that aren't my fault.

I think you should concentrate more on getting your grades up than who else has had this problems. truth is I have seen teachers get away with a lot because students "lie" a lot and they always have the school on their side. If you don't mind me asking, what math class is it you are taking and are you in the United States. I know my Junior year in high school I was stuck taking and Advanced Placement (college course) Calculus class even though I had never taken pre-calculus. When I transferred schools they messed everything up. I did my best and passed with a C. However, I am going to retake them both in college. So it was a worthless class to take in high school seeming as I have to retake it anyways. I tried countless times to explain to them that I had never taken pre-calculus but they reassured me that at my previous school I had. Well, let it be known the school was indeed wrong. lol. My best advice to you is if you can take an advanced class do it. Life is nothing without a little challenges. Plus, it will help out a ton in the long run. For example, my senior year consisted of one class I took online and that was it. I worked the rest of the time and saved up money to buy a car and other goodies (: I wish you the best of luck. If I can help you since your school does not offer tutoring, let me know. PM me. I have tutored many people in my middle school and high school. (: Good luck (:

Thank you for your input. I only have one grade I need to get up, and it's this one. I am in the US and in an Honors Algebra 2 class.

If I remember correctly, this course has a lot to do with the scientific calculator. Do you have one. I have a Texas Instrument that I have had for ages and it has done its duty lol. You just have to know how to use the calculator and how to insert the formulas into the calculator.
There are websites that go into detail about every button on the calculator. I will see if I can weed through them and find a good one for you.

A teacher has never talked to me like that, but they have said it to the other kids in the class, and to me it doesn't seem like it motivates them to do better. It just makes them dislike the teacher. Its not a very good way to get the student to do better, plus its not their fault if they don't understand the class. Maybe you should change teachers. Another one might treat you better and help you with what you need more

When someone apologizes enough times for something they'll never stop doing I think its fearless to stop believing them. I think its fearless to say "Your NOT sorry" and walk away.

In the curriculum, we are learning about functions. I do have a TI-84 Plus Silver calculator.

I agree that it doesn't really motivate me to do better, especially since with surgery and injuries, I have missed a lot of school. Another teacher would make things easier, but I'm not sure yet if I need to switch.
