Learning German - December 9th 2011, 07:20 AM

I'm learning German next year with my boyfriend, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips for me?

Who do you carry that torch for, my young man?
Do you believe in anything?
Or do you carry it around just to burn things down?

Meet me tonight on the turnpike my darling,
where we believe in everything.
If we sweat all these debts then we're sure to drown,
so let's strap ourselves up to this engine now
with our God who we found laying under the back seat.

I don't know about German but I've been learning french for like 7 years now. When you start learning a foreign language concentrate on vocabulary first. Like learn loads of words. its really fun to use them when you start making sentences later. Then move on to the verbs and all.
And PRACTICE! A LOT! Grammar needs hell lot of practice when learning a foreign language! And be regular.
And when you start making sentences, start reading novels and books in German. And then move on to listening skills. Download something in German, simple things like small dialogues and all. And converse in German with your boyfriend. Maybe write e-mails to German speaking people after a while. I write to some people in France, I correct their English and they correct my french!
Make a notebook just for grammar rules. When there are too many rules, we tend to get confused. And one notebook for exceptions and stuff like that. LIke in french we have exceptions to what all things are feminine/masculine.

I hope that helps

Its easier said that done BUT most of the great things wouldn't have ever been done if they hadn't been said first.

I suppose there are different ways of learning a language...my technique goes against Pisces'.

I would say that you should concentrate on grammar first and then develop vocabulary.

I'm taking German next semester. The course's aim is to enable you to read academic German in 10 weeks and I see, from the handbook, that they've set it up like I said. The first 8 weeks are grammar, and the last two is extensive vocabulary.

.
I learned it at school and didn't really have any control over what they taught us first. But the technique was fun. For the first 5 years, every chapter carried vocabulary that we hated A LOT! Grammar was taught too, but we started learning the different verb forms only last to last year. Before that they concentrated on teaching us the conjugation of verbs. It worked pretty fine. And now we just form sentences automatically. Its really fun to just use all those words that irritated us soo much!
