That is AMAZING! Well done!

"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it.
I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote,
“Dear Jim: I loved your card.”
Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.”
That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything.
He saw it, he loved it, he ate it."

THANK YOU SO MUCH EVERYONE! Gah, this whole thing is surreal. Every 15 minutes or so I have to sit back and take a deep breath, trying to come to terms with it. Is anyone else here applying?

Hey, congrats again!

Thank you!
YES, I do: If you don't have passion or motivation, then you can have a perfect SAT score and colleges won't give you a second glance. I wrote this in response to a question someone asked me a day or two ago, I think that's basically what you're looking for. Also, it's very important to visit a college to make sure that you're interested in attending it. I thought I was going to apply to both Harvard and MIT because they both have amazing academic departments, but after visiting Harvard, I learned that it was far different than what I would have liked, and it was not a place that meshed well with my personality. I fell in love with MIT the moment I stepped onto its campus. Don't be afraid to be picky!

You're welcome, and thank you! Do you know if there's any way to view accepted/denied applicants' essays (for any college, not necessarily MIT)? From your tumblr post it kind of seems like you could, but maybe not.

Well, I know that a few years ago MIT did follow the herd with respect to essay writing protocol and I'm sure you can find accepted/denied applicants' essays from past years if you do a thorough Google search. I know that for other schools, there are lists of essays available for the public, and they're relatively easy to find with searches. But with MIT (and several other well-known colleges whose names escape me at the moment), the application procedure is changing. I never filled out the Common Application completely. I never polished a draft of my long personal essay. MIT doesn't follow the Common App! It was extremely surprising, but such a relief. They had the application entirely online, with Part 1 being the biographical information, and Part 2 being the academic information - combined with 5 or so short essays, each one being a response to a given prompt. The longest essay you have to write for that has a 250 word maximum limit, so you need to be concise - but it's still much easier than writing a 500 word essay with an arc and conclusion.

People often say, "(insert university here) Class of 2016!" because they refer to the graduating class, just like how most schools refer to a group of students in the same grade by what the year in which they graduate. The typical undergraduate degree lasts for 4 years, and the next round of undergraduates begins in 2012.

Thanks for the advice! I googled sample college application essays, and I found this incredible link. The guy who wrote these essays was truly brilliant and extremely creative. I thought I'd post it on here in case anyone else needs help or wanted to take a look:
