I think I've made the wrong choice - February 23rd 2012, 08:14 PM

Hey Guys,
Well here's the situation, I applied to university (UK) to do history and I've received all five offers back. So its all good
over the last few weeks I've been turning my back on history and starting to hate it and I don't want to do this at Uni any more. What should I do? Whenever I've spoke to anyone at college they just mark me down as not being serious but I really have had a change of heart and now I want to do something else (social policy or health and social care)
So what should I do?
Should I A) just not go to Uni
or B) see whether I can change my options of what I am wanting to do
or C) just do history which i don't particually want to
What do you guys think

It's perfectly fine if you have a change of heart. I'm graduating from university this semester so I can tell you first-hand, people quite often do change their mind of what they wish to study. Sometimes it's a minor change, such as I changed from wanting to study chemistry and physics to physiology, medicine and pharmacology. On the other hand, one of my best friends changed from philosophy and linguistics to computer science and math. If I were you, I'd accept an offer from any one of the universities and later change your program to social policy, health care or whatever you find more interesting. You may still want to take a course or two in history because you may be good at it and it's always nice to bring up your marks with a few bird courses. If you reject each offer and apply to a different program, you're gambling because you may not be accepted anywhere.

I can rip you off, and steal all your cash, suckerpunch you in the face, stand back and laugh. Leave you stranded as fast as a heart-attack.

I would just change! People often have a change of heart during the first two years at university and switch around a lot. I have a friend who switched her major and she's a junior in college, so it's not to uncommon! Do something that your passionate about! (:

all i want is a place to call my own and
mend the hearts of everyone who feels alone,
you know to keep your hopes up high and your head down low.

Hey lucy,

Im in the UK too and just applying through UCAS so i know the system.... if you are completely against doing history there is no point accepting a course you dont want, there is no guarantee once on it that they will let you change. My advice is firstly to ring up UCAS and ask them what they think. Do you know which universities you would want to change to? Ring the admissions up for the deparment you need at each one and ask them if they are still taking late applicants and if they still have spaces left. If the uni agrees then sometimes UCAS will change it for you... however you may need to write a revised personal statement as Im assuming a history one would be quite different to your new course, so when you talk to the uni on the phone make sure you ask them if you can send them a revised version and get the correct email address. Reading the UCAS website, they may not let you but I think it is always worth a go http://www.ucas.com/students/offers/...ngchanges/faq3

Another option is to decline all of your choices so you are left with none on your UCAS track... firstly you will be eligible for extra, which I think starts soon? where you can add one choice for a uni and then if they give you an offer you can either reject or accept this. I am quite sure that if you reject this you can keep re applying for another uni and then another until the date that "extra" finishes. http://www.ucas.com/students/offers/faqs/replying/faq9

From july onwards, you could try and go through clearing to see if there is anything there... sometimes there can be good courses and it doesnt mean anything negative about you. My sisters boyfriend ended up at loughborough (which is a good uni) through clearing and he is top of his class and doing very well. Its definitely worth thinking about anyway

I guess if all else fails, you can take a year out and re apply next year. It will give you some time to get experience in the area you want to go into.. plenty of people do this and that way you will also know your grades by then, so any offers you get are unconditional.

I hope this helps!

Hey Everyone,
Thanks for the replies. I went to UCLan today and I've almost certainly decided that history is not the right course for me. but they said that if i put them as my firm choice then talk to admissions before I go to Uni and get in through that way and i've arranged an appointment with a careers/ UCAS person at college and see what help they can give me. But it looks as though I may take a year out.
Thanks again
