Which is safer... - January 19th 2009, 04:30 PM

For a girl to play?

Honestly, next year I want to play football. Half of the guys varsity team has given me their support on playing, but alot of my friends have frowned on the idea, because "I'm too fragile". I've played with guys before, no pads on a dirt field with broken glass and rocks and such and never gotten badly hurt. The guys were alot larger than me and didn't hold back when tackling. I've already played soccer for two years, and have seen my share of injuries.
A few of my friends as an alternitive to football want me on the drumline at school... so what do you think? Which do you think would be the best for me/any other girl.
Do you think its unfair to not let a girl play an all guys sport if she really wants to put the effort into it?

I think so long anyone is willing to get knocked around, football is fine,
go for whichever you honestly want to do more, regardless of what others say

and yeah, i guess it's just that a lot coaches think that they need all the testosterone they can get, it's definitely not fair,

you have my full support and i wish you luck

If you're asking safety, soccer is safer.

And no, I don't think girls shouldn't be allowed to play an all guys sport. But, guys should be allowed to play female sports. Guys aren't allowed to try out for a girls' sport at my school. And if that's the case, then girls should not be allowed to play football either.

My two cents...

Re: Which is safer... - January 19th 2009, 05:09 PM

I can see it from a guys point of view....I would not be comfortable with tackling a girl out there on the field. I'll feel like the worst person in the world if I injure her..

But I still think you should go for it if you really want to. I've seen girls on wrestling teams, and they sometimes do pretty well. As long as you understand the dangers of the sport, especially being a girl, then go for it. Theres a reason why girls don't normally play with guys in football....

Drumline is the safest...I really don't think theres a high probability of injury if you do that.

Anyway, I voted soccer as from what I've gathered, it's the same as British football?

I voted Association Football (tempting as the last option was ). Although I fail to see how anyone gets injured in American football with all that protective clothing

To be honest, no sport is one hundred percent safe. In the end, I would decide based on what you want to play. I'm going to move this to sports and entertainment because this is asking more for advice than it is debating the safety of these activities. If anyone disagrees, it can always be moved back.

If you want to play Football, do it! I know of girls who play and if they are committed to playing well, they do just as good as the guys. If you want this go after it and don't worry about what other people think of it.

Drumline is so safe. Not much can happen accidents wise. I think soccer is worse than drumline to get injured.

But like I said, play football if your heart is in it!

I think he means it as a double negative since he said "don't think girls shouldn't be allowed"

Seriously, on safety the last option is probably the worst! I'm pretty sure a lot more could go wrong if you were to be let lose in the kitchen than on a field. I think when safety comes into the question [which is what you asked xD] then soccer would be the safest option. I mean, the few injuries that happen in the game are usually all drama anyway! But if it's going for the sport that you want to play then stick with football. The main point is that you're playing a sport that you enjoy, no matter what others may think about it!

I totally vote you should do football...
If you have an opportunity to try out for a guys sport (I have a thing about this but that's a story for another time ) you should totally do it.
And you should be awesome, obviously.
Neither of them are totally safe but I guess as long as you're sensible then you won't be damaged beyond repair...
Tell me what you pick, I'm interested

Re: Which is safer... - January 21st 2009, 03:19 PM

Last option. Lulz.

Anyway, serious answer. Obviously drumline is the safest for a girl, or a guy for that matter, because unless you're in Spinal Tap drumming is pretty safe. But why on earth should anyone have to pick which sport to play based on how safe it is? There are far more important factors, the biggest one obviously being how much you enjoy it. I think that all sports (or at least all those that can be provided within time and money constraints) should be available to people of both sexes, although ideally there'd be some kind of ability grouping to minimise the risk of injury (small, unathletic people being tackled by people who look like bears is kind of dangerous, no matter the sexes of the people involved). Basically, if you want to play football, play football.

Go for it! Try out for football. If you aren't cut out for it, you won't make the team. It's worth a shot, though.

Tbh I don't think it matters which is safest, if you want to do it and know the risks then you should go for it. People do dangerous things all the time, like climbing up mountains and why do they do it if it's dangerous? Because they want to. Ahh just reminded myself of Billie Piper =/
