what to expand my jog? How much should I? - June 8th 2011, 05:12 AM

Every morning I go for 5 mile jog, I want to try and do a couple more miles, what do you think would be a good amount of miles to add on to the 5 miles I already do.

Take it slow. You might find yourself out of your depth if you suddenly go up to 6 miles. I'd increase it by maybe 0.1 miles a day, up until you're doing 6 miles, and see how it feels. If it feels fine then keep increasing by 0.1 miles a day.

But don't if you're easily triggered. If you're not easily triggered then go ahead.

You know what you might also want to try to increase the speed of the five miles just a little bit. Sometimes it isn't how long you push yourself but how hard. Be careful though, and talk to a doctor if you start having problems.
Stay in shape!

I would go with BDF here. Jogging is mostly about cardio exercise, and if you speed it up too much you might strain yourself too much. It's all about pace. Increase by one tenth or one eight of a mile every few days until you hit six miles. Then stay there for a little while, and (if you feel up to it) you can repeat the process.

Good luck!

I agree with everyone else who has already said about increasing the number of miles slowly. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with pushing yourself but apparently the most common reason that people give up when it comes to running is because they expect too much from themself and they end up burning themself out. I'd also suggest like the others have said by increasing your run by 0.1 miles every morning and see how that feels for you. Everybody is different and you're the one who knows your body best.

You're only 13, it's unhealthy to be doing much more even if you are capeable, in races you would not be able to enter more than 5m. Don't go higher than 6 for sure, but 6 would be useful for racing, means you'll have the ability to go higher.

I would take it slow trying to increase the mileage. However, I think before you try to increase the distance to increase the speed of what you can already do. For instance... You could try to do a sprint for 1/2 a mile and jog for the rest, or just increase your pace a bit so you take 1-2 minutes off each mile (and finish 5-10 minutes faster). You could also change your jogging course and try to find a course with some hills rather than on a flat surface.
It's not about the length of the run but how you train your body to work through it.

I'm not an expert but it probably isn't a good idea to jog so much (or at all) after you've just given birth.

Since you do it every day I don't know how you managed to do it when you wear nearly full term (what a trooper!) but right now I'd just relax if I were you. Bigger things to worry about!

In my opinion the earlier in life you start with proper exercise the better. It's a matter of getting into a good habit, but also a matter of shaping your body and keeping it healthy during what is the most rapid development and growth in your life. If you set good foundations now, it'l be a lot easier than trying to work towards the same goals later in life, even at my age lol.

But don't forget about eating. A 5 mile run could burn as much as 1000 calories, depending on the terrain. You have to regain that amount, or you'l be doing yourself serious damage in the long term at this age. Knackered joints leading to arthritis, muscle fatigue, even somewhat slowed neural development, poor immune system, lots of things.
