Finding someone(s) with which to thru-hike the AT. - August 19th 2013, 01:29 PM

(This is me, looking for someone to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail with me. Unfailingly, they all respond with: “Good morning,” and promptly disappear into their hobbit holes.)

So I, in all of my infinite wisdom, have decided to overkill on obliterating boredom in my life. I've always wanted to hike, I've always wanted to travel: The Appalachian Trail (2,000 miles and roughly five months of hiking) sounds great.

My parents already gave me the OK, which surprised the hell out of me. Anyway, that's out of the way. The only thing left is that I'm having a terrible time trying to find someone to hike with. At seventeen, one thing I don't want to do is solo-hike the AT, especially seeing as it will be my first really long hike. I don't know how to even go about it, really: Should I advertise? Where and how should I advertise? How should I separate the serial killers from the non-killers? Does anyone here know someone who hikes regularly, or who hiked the AT (or any trail, really), that could give me some advice on this?

Thanks in advance,

1. Do what you want within the bounds of reason, whenever you want to, and regret nothing. 2. If you have an opinion, don't beat around the bush, or there isn't a point in saying it. 3. Don't keep the company of anyone who won't like you and will try to change you.

I did a search for "finding people to hike the appalachian trail (which I assume this is what you meant ) and there seems to be a few sites that assist with that. I'm sure you can find some experienced people through those that would go with you. Good luck!
