should I learn spanish if I go to Florida ? - January 6th 2014, 07:45 PM

Hi , I'm a 24 years old israeli and I am moving to FL with my dad . Right now I speak hebrew , english , german , french , arabic and I am advanced in chinese (currently learning it in a course) . Since FL has probably the biggest spanish speaking population in the US , and since this language became a very widely spoken language in America , do you think I should add it to the mix ?

Depends how you look at it, most people in Florida, if not all, can probably speak/understand English.

You don't have to if you don't want to since I'm sure you'll be able to have interesting conversations with a lot of English-speakers as well, but learning Spanish may at least give you more variety in your conversations.

It's certainly not necessary...but it is entirely up to you. I hope you enjoy the United States!

Almost everyone in Florida will be able to speak/understand English, so you don't really have to learn Spanish if you don't want to. However, it's always helpful to know another language, and you probably wouldn't find it too difficult considering how many other languages you've learned.

Since there are so many Spanish speaking individuals it can help to be fluent in Spanish if looking for a job. However, it isn't something that is a necessity. I think you would be fine if you didn't learn Spanish. In the end I think this is something that is up to you. What would you like to do?

I went to Florida for 10 days and I wasn't ever in a language-barrier situation, so I say it's entirely up to you.

As someone who lives in Florida, I can tell you that it really depends on where you want to live in Florida. For instance, knowing Spanish in Miami would be really helpful. There are a lot of people there that speak mostly Spanish, although many know English. But honestly, the majority of the state is English speaking. Even though we may have a higher Spanish speaking population than other areas of the United States, it is still not the dominant language.

I say if you have the time/patience and want to learn it, it definitely won't hurt anything but it isn't necessary.
