Gap year advice!? - December 29th 2016, 02:09 PM

Im going on my gap year next year. I am looking to travel to Australia in January for about 3 months. I have 4000 saved so far and then will earn another few thousand this summer. i am expecting to start my gap year with about 6000. will this be enough as i will not be working when im out there? Also, has anyone travelled in Australia and can recommend cheap places to stay and what to do? i will be going with one friend who is the same age as me (both will be 19). Any advise on travelling will also be great as i have never travelled before!! Thankyou in advance

Hey there,

This sounds like a lot of fun. I don't know much about traveling to a different Country for an extended period of time. I know some things about traveling, I don't know much in terms of where to stay.

Have you looked into travel vaccines? Usually this is important to protect you from infections, illnesses, etc., that your body otherwise don't normally come into contact with. Usually you talk to your family doctor about this where they can refer you or give you some places to go to get the travel vaccines, if you need them.

When traveling bring documents saying why you are staying for a period of time and if you have your return flight. Sometimes Airport security asks these questions. If you take medication, bring the amount you need if a doctors note explaining you need them.

When you do travel it's recommend to let your Countries Government travel agency know and you are put on a list where they will email you if there were any natural disasters. This allows them to know you are there. I am not sure what Country you are in, but for an example Canada has one which looks like this. This can be helpful for you and others.

I am not sure how much money you should bring with you. Have you made an itinerary where it maps out what you will be doing and when? This might be helpful to estimate on a cost for your total trip. I am not sure if this website would be helpful, it's about Australia and things you can go to and activities.

I hope this is helpful and gives you some things to look into. If you have other questions feel free to write back.

Hey there,

I don't really know a lot about traveling to a different country since I basically traveled in my country during my gap year because I always wanted to explore my country. I recently came across a pretty interesting website https://www.gapyear.com/ I am not sure if you will find what you are looking for on that website but you could always give it a try. I hope you have fun during your travels.

Chantal and Kav have given some pretty good advice.

I think the most important thing is to:

Prepare documents, sort them together. Make an itinerary. It's important to go to a foreign country with a plan in mind, rather than to wander aimlessly in a strange land surrounded by people speaking a language you don't know or understand very little of.

Make sure your passport and legal documents are updated. In the United States, they expire every ten years and I had to get mine renewed this past fall. It's very important to do this, or else, you won't be able to return home when your gap year vacation is up.

Make sure you have traveller's insurance. This is important in case your belongings get lost at the airport, the hotel, or there's any sort of damage during your vacation.

Budget wisely. You said you plan to use $6000 for three months. Will that be enough? Will food be provided? What about room and board? Will you need to pay a weekly fee to stay at one place? What about attractions and points of interest? A lot of places make you pay for admission. These are some things to consider.

As someone living in Australia, there are a couple of things you should know. Firstly, check your visa. Not all visas let you work. So if your visa doesn't let you work, thats something to consider.
Also, depending on where in Australia you're headed, the prices change. For example, Perth and Adelaide are cheaper than say Sydney. So that is something to consider, and even then, living in the city is often cheaper (at least where I stay)
Hope this helps. Have a lovely time.

PM me if you ever wanna talk. Send a message my way.
And remember, you matter. You're awesome. You're beautiful. Stay strong, the world will get better.

May The Force be With You.
