Calling people from England/Europe! - February 12th 2012, 03:15 PM

Hey guys -

I'm from Canada and I'm going on an exchange to England next year (October 2012 to June 2013). I'll be studying at the University of Essex.

I want to do a lot of traveling while I'm there. Do you have any suggestions of places/cities/countries that I should definitely visit?

Some of my preferences:

- I'm Italian, so I definitely want to see Italy. Do you know of any tour groups in Italy?

- I want to see a lot of England, Ireland, Germany, France, and Greece. I'd like to visit Portugal, Sweden, Spain, Finland, Norway, and Switzerland as well.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Well, that's a lot of traveling for quite a short amount of time haha. If you're looking to tour around Europe with a group try looking at www.statravel.co.uk... They sell packages, although it might be cheaper to source it all yourself.

Depends, what kind of things do you want to see? Ireland is nice, as is Scotland and it will cost to travel around europe. I have a friend who is currently staying in scotland at my uni, from germany. Who is taking a weekend every now and then to travel around the UK. Maybe this might be a better option for whilst you are in uni, but take a vacation at the end to travel round more of europe?

You can get a rail pass for Europe that allows you to jump on any train and travel between countries. My friend did that last summer and managed to cover a lot of places, she said it was amazing. It doesn't count for all European countries, and the UK doesn't count either, but for the mainland it could be helpful.

Also, you need to visit Scotland. Obviously.

Germany in December. The Germans do Christmas like no other country on Earth. Also, take a look at Interrail (http://www.interrailnet.com/). I haven't done this myself, but apparently it's a good and popular way to tour Europe.

I wouldn't bother with Scotland, though. Scotland sucks.

Scotland is awesome ^

If you want to visit lots of places in Europe then Interailing is probably the best idea if you don't want to spend loads.

Most of England is very beautiful! If you're into scenery, places like Looe, Plymouth, and St. Ives are just a couple of examples of some nice places to see. Then there's London, Birmingham, York and many many other places you could visit...each is unique in that they all have different kinds of attractions. I would suggest picking up a book that lists cities and things to see in the UK or just searching online. I also really liked Edinburgh, Scotland

Can't believe I missed this! I've just moved to Essex (on NYE, actually) and am here for two years. Also Canadian. Also in a position where I want to travel as much as possible. If you're still around this website closer to your travel dates, post another thread and I'll let you know whatever I know by then...

Side note - in your specific situation what I'd suggest is traveling England on the weekends, and then taking a couple of weeks to a month at the end to do continental Europe.
